DEVICE FOR THE CONVERSION OF MOTION.
SPECIFICATION forming atter Letters Patent. No. 761,173, dated May 31, 1904.

To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, BENJAMIN J. C. HOWE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for the Conversion of Motion, of which thefollowing is a specification.
The objects of my invention are the conver: sion of a rotary into reciprocating motion and a reciprocating into a rotary motion, and more especially fwas my object to attain an extended rectilinear motion from a rotary motion, as the primary purpose in the production of this device was prompted by the necessity of a suitable means for the construction of comparatively light apparatus for the operation of pumps for fire-extinguishing purposes to be equivalent to the more cumbersome pumping machinery of the ordinary type which is met with in that class of work. The necessity of an extended rectilinear mtion from an apparently light system of members of rotation was desired, as a piston of small area when reversed at the end of its stroke would affect the column of water issuing from the nozzle in a much less degree than would a piston of large area and that the strokes would be fewer in number than in pumps of ordinary practice, and I attain these objects by means and construction described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in the diflerent views of which similar characters of reference refer to similar parts, and in which Figure 1 is a broken side elevation of-my de vice as applied to a pump. Fig. 2 is a top view of same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional end view'on line 3 3 looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 4: is ,a detached view of guard mechanism I employ to retain gears in mesh.
(0 is a reciprocating double rack or oblong gear reciprocating longitudinally between two bearing-uprights on base 6, extending upwardly to the center of said gear and adapted to support sections of shafts or pins atlb, extending in line with each other and projecting nearly to the said gear. At 6 is a projection on one of the said bearing-uprights providing a stationary pivotal point for a shifting guard=link d at 6 which is at opposite end pivoted to uppenend of the upright standard-c to the axle-pin of the guard-roller 0, also mounted at this point, said standard 0 being mounted at lower end on the shifting or vibrating shaft 6 of gear g. Now as the respective ends of the standard care stayed by the link cl and arm e, that it cannot swerve laterally, but being free to move up or down as far as the gear 9 may move up or down within the oblong gear (2,, as represented by dotted lines g in Fig. 4, as when gear 9 meshes at point a or at point a, a guard rail or bar a being provided; preferably, at top of the gear a, over and under which the guard-roller 0 is adapted passingaround the end of said guard when inner end of stroke is reached, as seen at 0 in Fig. 1, or at 0 when outer end of stroke 1s reachediwhereby the said gear g is retained in positive mesh with the teeth a. The double rack or oblong gear is provided with aflange projecting on both sides, as at a, and suitable recess or guide at I), provided in base 5, within which said rack is reciprocated operating in connection with gears above described.

In operation of my device as applied in this case to a pump the power is applied by belt to the belt-wheel rotating the gear Q2 in either direction, g and g being rotated thereby in reverse direction, the latter engaging with the teeth of the oblong gear a at alternate intervals, as in this case at the upper side a then at the lower side a, actuating the oblonggear casting, the shifting of the said shifting gears being accomplished by means of the constant rotation of the pinion g, when the arched section of teeth at either end of said oblonggear is met rising at one end of stroke and falling at the other, the antifriction-roller'c being at all times in contact with the guard (0 alternately above then below said guard, and as when rotary motion is transmitted to the pinion g gear-casting a is reciprocated, and when a reciprocating motion is given to said gear-casting a from some external source this motion is in turn converted and results in a constant rotary motion being transmitted through the train of gear-wheels to the beltpulley.
In the application of my'device there are al terations that may be resorted to that are'within the spirit and scope of my-i-nvention, and I would have it understood that I feel at liberty to make any such alterations as fall fairly within such scope, and
What I claim as new,and desire by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device for conversion of motion, an oblong internal gear having rectilinear reciprocating motion, 'a gear-pinion having rotary motion operating within said oblong gear and meshing continuously with'the teeth thereof, arms mounted at each side of said oblong gear at fixed pivotal points at one end and supporting the axle of said pinion at the other'end', a guard-rail secured to said oblong gear, a'guard-roller controlled by its engagement with said guard-rail and means to support and retain said roller in a position constantly vertical above said pinion substantially as and for the purposes set'forth.
2. Ina device for the conversionof rotary motion to reciprocating or reciprocating to rotary motion an oblong internally toothed gear formed asof two parallel racks joined at ends to-semicircular internally-toothed arcs proto secure viding a continuous series of teeth, a pinion. of a diameter smaller than the space between the racks, swinging arms pivoted at one end to a fixed point and supporting the outer ends of axle of said pinion at their swinging ends, a link equal in length to that of said arms pivoted at one end at a fixed point preferably directly over or above the said pivotal point of said arms and extending parallel with said swinging arms to a swinging pivotal point directly over the axle of said pinion, an upright'standard pivoted to said link at the latter pivotal point at upper end and to said axle of said pinion at the lower end, a guard-roller journaled at upper pivotal point of said link and said upright, a guard-rail with which said guard-roller is in constant contact. alternately above and below it during continuous rotary motion of said pinion secured to and moving with said oblong gear as set forth. p 1
3. In a device for the conversion of rotary motion, a reciprocating member provided with open center of oblong form, a continuous series of gear-teeth within said center, a rotating pinion whose teeth are adapted to mesh in said gear-teeth the outside diameter of said pinion being smaller than the distance between the points of the teeth on opposite sides ofoblong gear so formed, swinging arms pivoted at a fixed point at center of the height ofthe oblong opening in said reciprocating member and at each side thereof in bearings formed on the base in this case, said pinion mounted in movable ends of said arms,aguardroller mounted ata point outside of said oblong gear, a guard-rail provided on and moved with said oblong gear adapted toengage said guard-roller and means for transmitting rotaryi motion to said parts, substantially as set fort i.
