To all whom it may concern p I 4 Be it 'known'that I, HUnsoN F. STORY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Highland, in the county of San Bernardine and State of California, have invented taken up by the other piston smoothly and;

Insaid former invention I provide two cams of similar construction arranged re versely ona common shaft, the working faces of the cams beingarranged horizontally so as to act directly on the sucker rod frames to reciprocate them; By this construction the length of the strokes, of the sucker rods depehdedyupon the thrust of the cams and it is evident that such stroke would begoverned' more or less by the distroke a larger cam would'be necessary.
Generally stated, this invention differs from said former invention in the provision of a single cam-arrangedto act upon diametrically opposite cross headsworking at right angles to the sucker rods andconnected to the sucker rods by bell-cranklevers.'- By this constructionand arrangement Iain enabled to obtain a largernurnber; of strokes per minute and a greater-length of piston stroke without materially increasing the diameter of the cam over the diameter of" the cam in said former patent.

Fig. 8 is an analytical, diagrammatic view of the cam andsucker rods. p p I An'inner sucker rod 1 and an outer tubular sucker rod '2 surrounding the inner sucker rod are provided for attachment to Cir stufling box forming a slide 3 through which the inner sucker rod 1 extends and to which is pivoted a pairof connecting links 4 that are pivoted at 5 to a lower bell-crank lever 6 journaled at 7 to a suitable support as a frame 8; and the inner sucker rod is fixed to an upper slide 9 to which is pivoted a pair of connecting links 10 that are pivoted at 11 to an upper bell-crank lever 12 journaled at 13 to the frame 8, The bell-crank levers 6, 12 are superposed and work in a common plane.
The-sucker-rod slides 3 and 9'are superposed and reciprocatably engage a pair of verticalslide rods. 14 which are supported below by any suitable means, not shown, andwhich are supported above by a bracket 15 carried by thefraine ,8.
The lower bell-crank lever 6 is pivoted at 16 to 'a lower connecting rod 17 which is pivotedl at' 18 to a front, lower, horizontally working cross-head vl9 thatis provided at its centerwith a beveled roller-2Q and that is adjustably connected by shouldered bolts 21 to a rear fc'ross head 22 provided at its center with a beveled roller 23; and the upper bell-crank lever 12 is pivoted at 24 to an upper connecting rod25 which is pivoted at 26 to an upper, front, horizontally working cross-head27 thatis provided at its center with a beveled roller- 28 and thatis adjustably connected by shouldered bolts 29 to an upper 're'ar cross-headjgOprovided at its centerfwith a beveled roller-31.
The shouldered bolts 21, 29 are provided with washers32 'andafford means to adjust the cross-head's 19, 22and 28, 30, respec tively, toward one another to compensate for wear.

The cam shaft 41 may be driven by any suitable means and in this instance I have shown a pulley 44 for this purpose as there is little, if any, variation-in the load and the operation is so smooth that a belt and pulley may be used where other devices of this kind employ gear wheels which of course are more expensive.
Particular attention is called to the unique construction of the cam 38 which is provided with superior and inferior cusps 45, 4G that engage the rollers of the lower and upper cross-heads 19, 22 and 27, 30 respec-- tively at different periods of time, said cusps being bisected by different axial planes of the'cam. i
The'cam 38 is provided between the superiorand inferior cusps 45, 46 for 180 of its diameter with an upstroke, constant speed, load-lifting limb 47 and for less than lSOTof its diameter with a rdownstroke returning limb extending from the superior cusp substantially halfway to the inferior cusp in an accelerating limb'48 and-extending from thence to the inferior 'cuspin a:
slowing limb 49; and the cam is provided at the inferior cusp adjacent the slowing limb with a rest face 50'; and the camis provided i with an upstroke valve-closing limb 51 extending from the rest face to the lifting limb 47;.
