Description

'dignit tant atmt @fitta Leiters Patent No. 75,580. datent March 17, 1.868,
turnover) Device Por. LASTING BOOTS AND SHOES.
I/lge .salernitana tn in tten ttttets prient mit uniting artt nf tigt stmt.
y Be it known that I, JOSEPH G. RUST, of Xenia, county of Greene, in the State of Ohio, have invented anew and useful Improvement on a Machine for Lasting Boots and Shoes, commonly called Lasting-Pincers;'
and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of theconstruction and operation of the saine, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the machine.` p v Figure 2, a side view bf the piston D and lever H, composed of one har.
Similar-letters of reference indicate corresponding points.
This invention relates to'a new and useful improvement o n a machine or pincers for drawing the upper leather" of a boot or shoe over the last, so that it may fit snugly thereto, which operation is technically termed lasting i 1 The invention vconsists of two pairs of jaws connected together and operated by a semicircular lever, piston, and toggles, as hereinafter set forth. I l
A A, iig. 1, represent the two maia or principal jaws of the device, which are curved in S-form,v and have each acircul'ar or ovallop, a, at'their centre, one lloop fitting .within the other, and connected by a pivot, b. The upper ends of thejawsA A are connected by a toggle, B, to a nut, C, through which Vthe piston D passes, said piston extending down through the loop a off the. jaws A A, Vand having the middle joint of the toggle F fastened into its end by a'pivot at E. The toggle F is connected withthe upper end of the jaws G G, which are, connected with thejaws A A by pivot c. Near the upper end of the piston D is a fulcrum, K, attached to its side, on which the under edge of the lever H presses and slides in operating the machine. The semioircular lever H is made of ironA or, other suitable metal, constructed in form as shown on the drawings, and consists usuallyr of two bars of similar form, united atthe handle I, with sufficient Space between the two hars to allow'the piston'D to play between them, and the nut C to be embraced between the lowel` ends. Thislever is attached to the nut C by'means of pivots at each side, d. The upper-'edge of one bar of the lever is notched, Lso that when itis brought down, the click L will drop into a notch, and hold the machine in position. rlfhelever may i also be constructed of one semicircular bar, iig. 2, notched at the upper edge, and fastened to a projection of the nut C by means of a pivot, d, and work through a slot in the upper end of theA piston D, and betfastened,v
when operating, by means of a click with eccentric-end, as in g. 2. The lower ends of thejaws A A andG G are in line with each other, and it will be seen, by referring tol fig. 1, that by taking'hold of the lover H at the handle I, and bringing it down, the nut C will be raised, while the point of the piston at E will bemoved down which will cause the jaws G. to clamp together with the jaws AA, and at the same time the two pairs ofjaws A A, G G will consequently be moved towards each other, and the leather 4firmly grasped at each side of the last, so that the upper leather of the boot or shoe may be stretchedV and drawn snugly over the last.v
This implement may be manipulated with the greatest facility. It works with remarkable ease and perfaction, and it will greatly expedite the workiof lasting boots and shoes. i l.
I disclaim the invention of the two pairs ot'jaws A A and G Gr, toggles B and F, and nut C, 'in the original invention of George Kemp, secured to him by Letters Patent, bearing date the 16th day of January, A. D. 1866. What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The piston D, and the lever H and click L, in connection therewith, in conzibinationv with the piston D,.all arranged substantially in the manner as and for the purposes herein set forth. I
JOSEPH 4Gr. RUST.
