IMPROVEMENT IN HARNESS-MAKERS CLAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No 142,384, dated September 2, 1873; application filed July 19, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL EIGHME, of Chicago, in the county of (look and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spring-Clamps, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to apparatus for holding leather in the operation of sewing it for harness or shoe making or other purposes; and consists in a clamp constructed and operating as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a vertical section of the clamp, showing the construction. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of Fig. 1 taken on the line 00 00. Fig.3 is a horizontal section of Fig. 1 taken on the line y y. 7
Similar letters of sponding parts.
A is the base. B is the stand. 0 O are the jaws. wedge-shaped, E being the edge or point of the Wedge. On each of the inclined sides of the wedge there is a rib or tongue, F. (See Fig. 2.) At the point D there is a shoulder on each side equal to the thickness of the lower ends of the jaws. The inner sides of the jaws are grooved for the ribs F, and fitted to the inclined sides of the wedge, as seen in Fig. 1. G is a band around the jaws. H-H are fulcrum-rods, which extend through the band and jaws. I is a spring between the jaws. J is a cross-head connected with the reference indicate corre- From the point D upward the stand is foot-lever K by the bar L. M is the fulcrum of the lever K. The jaws are raised by pressing on the lever K, and when raised they are lowered and are spread apart by the spring I. N N are vertical springs attached to the stand and to the jaws, as seen in the drawing. Thesesprings draw the jaws down and hold them in their normal position, which is to tightly clamp the leather. The jaws act as levers, and turn slightly on their fulcrum-rods I when raised or lowered. The cross-head and lever K work having a stand, B, jaws O G, openingspring I, band G, springs N N, cross-head J, conmeeting-bar L, and foot-lever K, combined and arranged substantially as set forth.
2. A clamp so constructed that the jaws are opened by an upward movement thereof, and closed by a downward movement, substantially as and for the purposes shown and described.
DANIEL EIGHME.
