Letters .Patent No. 75,052, datectMarct 3, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN EXTENSION-LADDERS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
.Be it known that I, BENJAMIN PINE, of the city, county, and State ofNew York, have invented a new and improved Ladder; and I do hereby'declare that the following'is a full and exact description thereof, whiclrwill Aenable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to a new and improved extension-ladder designed for general purposes.
The invention consists in having the ladder constructed of two sections or lengths, one of which is fitted in guides attached to the other, so that it may slide freely up or down, and having the sliding section or length connected to one or more endless chains, which are applied to tho stationary length, all being arranged in such a manner that by turning a crank the endless chains will be moved, and with`thein the sliding section or length, and the latter extended or drawn in, as required. In the accompanying sheet of drawings- Figure 1 is a front view of my invention.
" Figure 2, a.. sidesecjional view of the same, taken in the line a; x, igfl.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A B represent the two sections or lengths ot the ladder, constructed in the usual way, b ut of dii'orent widths, .B being narrower' than A, so that. its side-strips a c may be fitted within the side-strips b b of A, and slide freely up and down when thus placed, the side-strips a a of B being fitted within guides c c, attached to the upper ends of the side-strips Zz Zz of A, (see lig. l.) In the section or length A there are placed one or tw'o endless chains, C C, which work over toothed pulleys D bon shafts E E, fitted in the section or length A, one near each end, the lower shaft E having a crank, F, at one end, for the purpose of turning it. Each chain C has a pin, d, projecting from one of its lengths, and these pins are fitted in sockets G secured to the inner surfaces ofthe side-pieces a a of B, (see more particularly g. 2.)
From the above description `it will be seen th'at by turning the crank F the endless chains C C will bc moved, and consequently the section or length B may be extended or drawn in, according to the direction in which the crank is turned. The section or length B may be held at any desired point by a pawl, aX, engaging with atoothed pulley, D, or with a ratchet, 12X. .Y
In extending this ladder, the outer ends of the sidc-strips a a oi' the section or length B are placed against the building and the crank F turned. The ends of the side-strips a a may be provided with rollers e c, to reduce friction as the length B is extended and forced upward against the house.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Pai-tent- An extension-ladder, composed of two parts, A I3, fitted together, and connected by endless chains C C,
all arranged to Operate substantially in the manner as shown and described.
i BENJAMIN PINE.
