Letters Patent No. 83,795, dated Norcmber 3, 1868.
IMPROVE!) STEP-LADDER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin g thawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in Which- Figure l is a perspective view ofl the ladder when used for gathering fruit and the like purposes, and
Figure 2 is a. detached longitudinal section, showing the position of the braces, and the manner ot fastening them, when used as an extension-ladder.
The nature of my invention relates to that class of fruit-ladders which are constructed by pivoting two ladders, by their top rounds, to opposite sides of a platform, and bracing the saine from hangers, attached to the under side of the platform; and consists in attaching the braces to a thick guide-block, which slides up and down on the hanger, having corresponding holes in the block and hanger, to receive a pin, for the. purpose of fastening and holding the ladders from slipping, and for permanently fastening the ladders when extended to their full length.
To enable others skilled in the arts to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its use and construction.
A A are two ladders, with rounds of the usual construction.
B is the platform.
C C are the hangers or legs to the platform.
D D are the blocks or guide, to which the bracesF F are pivoted by the rounds E E.
The holes a' 1' lr are to receive the pin H, for the purpose of taste-ning the blocks inimovably on the hangers.
The guide-blocks D-D have a mortise through the centre, to receive the hangers C C.
Thus it will be seen that by means ofthe holes /r'r lr and the piu H, the block D D can be fastened at any elevation ot' the platform desired, and secured against the possibility of slipping, and, when the ladders are extended to their full length, the pin H may 1be inserted in the upper hole, 1f, making one continuous ladder of A A, of great strength and convenience.
Having thus described my invention,
What l claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, isf The guide-blocks D D, the pin H, and roundsE E, when combined with the platform-braces and ladders, as and for the purposes setforth.
In Witness that l claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 3d day of September,l868.
