PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN FOWLER PRENTIGE, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
CASIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 750,122, dated January 19, 1904. Application filed April 21, 1963. Serial No. 153,655. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN FOWLER'PRENTICE, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough ofBrooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Case, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a case for inclosing type-writing, adding, sewing, and other machines, not only to protect them from dust and exposure to the atmosphere, but also to allow their ready transportation. According to the form here illustrated it comprises a base and a cover or top portion, the latter being fitted with a suitable handle and mounted to slide on the base. Fastening devices are provided for holding the cover in active position and means are also provided for automatically moving the cover back out of position as soon as the fastening devices are released. Various other features of major or minor importance are involved, and all will be fully set forth hereinafter.
This specification is an exact description of one example of my invention, while the claims define the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the cover partly open. Fig. 3 is afront elevation, and Fig. 4 is a section on'the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
The base 10 is flat or plate-like, as shown,
' and is constructed, preferably, of wood. It
has in its upper face at each side an undercut or dovetail groove 11-, and on its under side adjacent to its edges overhanging ledges 12 are provided, these ledges 12 serving to carry slidably a shelf which may be'moved in or out at will and which when the type-writer is in use may be drawn out to serve as an extension of the base 10. Said base is formed also with a groove 14: in its upper face for the reception of pencils and the like, and cavities 15 are preferably provided to receive the bottom knobs'ofthe type-writer.
The cover is formed, preferably, of a suitable framing covered with stout fabric or veneer and coin prises a top wall 16, which is essentially horizontal, a rear wall 17, and side walls 18. The rear wall 17 has one or more projections 17, which limit the forward movement of the cover. 18 indicates a cup-fastened to the side of the cover to carry an inkbottle, pins, or the like. The side walls have at their lower edges dovetail beads 19, which fit slidably within the grooves 11, and antifriction-rollers 20 are provided, these rollers extending below the beads 19 and bearing on the bottom surfa'oeof the grooves 11, so as to mount the cover on the base in such a manner as to allow the free sliding of the cover forward and back on the base. F astening-hooks 21 are mounted on the sides of the case and coact with eyes 21 to hold the'oase closed or open, as may be desired, the rear eyes 21 preventing the case from sliding off the base 10. For the purpose of automatically sliding the cover backward I provide a weight 22, which has an eye 23,"sliding on a downwardly and forwardly inclined rod 24, extending from the upper portion of the cover along one of its sides 18 downward to the bottom thereof. This weight is provided with a second eye or pul ley 25, which slides on a cord 26, one end of this eye 27 loosely receives the cord. The
weight 22 tending to drop slides along the rod 24:, and in doing so draws down on the loop of the cord 26, which lies between the upper end of the cord and the eye 27. This action pulls the cover rearward into the position shown in Fig. 2, the rollers 20 permitting the easy movement of the same. drawings I have shown only one weight 22 and its appurtenances, but, if desired, two may be provided, one being placed at each side of the cover In the Ioo 28 indicates racks which are placed at the inner side of eachwall 18 and may be used to carry various articles employed in connection withtype-writers. A horizontal shelf 29 is also provided, this being located just under the spring-roller hereinafter described and being principally useful for carrying sheets of paper to be used in the type-writer.
The front of the case is open, except for a curtain 30, which has its upper edge wound on a spring-roller 31 of the ordinary construction, this roller holding the curtain 30 normally wound, but permitting it to be drawn down, as shown in Fig. 1, the curtain then resting snugly against the edge of the walls 18 and having a slat 32 at its lower edge, the projecting ends 32 of which are arranged to fasten under hooks 33, secured to the front edges of the walls 18 at the lower portions thereof. These hooks project below the top of the base 10, and when the slat is engaged with the hooks it lies in front of the base 10 and prevents rearward movement of the cover.
The use and advantage of this device will be apparent. When closed, as in Fig. 1, it effectually covers the type-writing machine, and by grasping the handle on the top wall 16 of the cover the case, with its load, may be readily carried from place to place. If desired, suitable fastenings may be provided for securing the type-writer more firmly in the case; but these are not required nor absolutely essential. The base of the case also serves as astand for the typewriter when it is to be operated, and when this is desired it is only necessary to release the curtain 30, whereupon the weight or weights 22 will throw back the cover and expose the type-writer. If a supplemental shelf is provided below the base, this shelf may be drawn out at will to serve as an extension therefor.
Various changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of my invention may be resorted to at will without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. Hence I consider myself entitled to all such variations as may lie within the intent of my claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent .1. A case, comprising a base, acover mounted to slide thereon, aweight, means for movably mounting the weight on the cover, a cord attached at one end to the base and at the other end to the cover, and means on the cover with which the cord has running engagement, said cord also having running engagement with the weight.
