Be it known that I, J nssE M. COFFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bellaire, in the county of Belmont and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Bench- Vise, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved vise, my object being to provide a simple, inexpensive, effective, and easily-manipulated bench-vise having a stationary jaw and a movable jaw having a sliding movement and which can be moved by hand to the article to be clamped, requiring but a minimum use of the clamping-screw to secure same in a clamped position.
A further object of my invention is to provide means whereby the movable jaw can be moved up to the article to be clamped by footpower, thereby leaving both hands free to handle thearticle to be clamped until the movable jaw has closed upon it, and to provide means whereby the foot can hold the movable'jaw clamped to the article until the operator has secured it by means of the clam ping-screw.
A still further object of my invention. is to provide means whereby the reversal of the clamping-screw by one or two turns will unlock a pawl-and-ratchet device and 'aweight will automatically slide the moving jaw to its normal distance from the stationary jaw.
My invention consists of an elongated base having a recessed stationary jaw thereon, a ratchet formed longitudinally along the center of the base, a movable jaw having a stem sliding on the base and workjn g through the jaw, the stem being hollowed out and downwardly and rearwardly open, a block fitting in said stem and carrying a pawl engaging the ratchet, and a clamping screw working in a threaded aperture in the block, means carried by the clam pingscrew for forcing the pawl out of engagement with the rack-teeth when the block is moved slightly rearward,
and means for automatically sliding the mov ing jaw from the stationary jaw when the pawl is disengaged.
My invention consists also in the novel features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, particularly the movable jaw and stem.

In the drawings, A represents an elongated base widened intermediate its ends, so that it will solidly set on a bench or other support. Down the center of this base are formed a series of rack-teeth A, a smooth surface being left on each side of the teeth on which slides the movable stem 15. -Mounted on the base intermediate its ends is a hollow stationary jaw A arching over a portion of the rackteeth. An inner wall of the jaw A is horizontally grooved at A for a purpose which will hereinafter appear, and 011 each side of the rack-teeth in advance of the jaw A are slots A, in which are mounted pulleys A The stem 13 is hollowed out, as shown at B, and carries a jaw B movable with reference to the jaw A A block 0 is adapted to fit in the stem B and to slide within same on the base A. This block hasathreaded perforation O. Its lower face is recessed, as shown at O and at its rear end two parallel lugs C project horizontally rearward. The block is also transversely apertured at O, the aperture intersecting the recess O A pawl 0 having a head C, a beveled rear end O and an elongated slot fits in the recess C the head projecting in advance of the block and the rear beveled end resting between the lugs C.
The pawl is loosely pivoted by apin C, pass ing through the aperture C and slot O The jaw B has a bore B through which passes a clamping-screw D, its forward end being of the usual construction. Its rear threaded portion works in the threaded aperture 0 of the block 0, and the screw terminates in a reduced threaded end D. The trip per consists of a flat plate E, having an aperture E and a central depending tooth E beveled onits forward face. The aperture E is of greater diameter than the screw D, and the plate slips and hangs loosely thereon, the tooth resting between the lugs C and contacting with the end 0 of the pawl. A nut E fits over the end D, being held by a washer, and prevents the tripper-plate from slipping off the end. portion of the front of the jaw B is cut out and a wear-plate B is secured therein," the clamping-screw turning on said plate.
A cord F is secured to the stem 13 in the rear of the stationary jaw and carried forward through the groove A and over the adjacent pulley A a weight F being secured to its free end. A cord G is secured to the movable jaw and carried rearwardly over the other pulley A and at its lower end is secured to a pivoted treadle G.
The operation of my device is as follows: The tooth E of the washer or trigger E, hearing on the end of the pawl at C lifts the head of the pawl out of engagement with the teeth A, when the screw D is partially unscrewed, so as to cause the nut E to tend to wedge the trigger E against the rear end of the block 0. The weight F holds the moving jaw away from the jaw A By pressing the forward end of the treadle down with the foot the jaw B is moved toward the jaw A clamping the article to be gripped. Pressure of the foot will hold the jaw firmly against the article, leaving both hands of the operator free to arrange the article between the jaws and turn the clamping-screw. A slight turn of the screw will draw the block 0 forward, increasing the space between the block and the nut E relieving the rear of the pawl of pressure, and the head will fall by reason of its weight and prevent further forward movement of the block. An additional turn of the screw will cause the jaw B to firmly grip the article held between the jaws. When it is desired to separate the jaws, it is only necessary to turn the screw sufficiently to bring the block 0 adjacent the nut E when the tripper will bear on the end of the pawl, lifting the head, and the weight will slide the jaw B away from the jaw A It will be obvious that a spring can be employed in lieu of a weight and that the mechanism described may be applied to other forms of Vises than a benchvise.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device of the kind described comprising an elongated base-plate having a series of rack-teeth formed thereon, a hollow, stationary jaw mounted midway the ends of said plate and above the rack-teeth, a movable jaw sliding on said base-plate and having a stem working through the stationary jaw, a pulley arranged adjacent the front of the base-plate, a cable secured to the stem of the movable jaw and passing over the pulley, a weight at the free end of said cord adapted to draw the movable jaw away from the stationary jaw, means for counteracting said weight and drawing the movable jaw to the stationary jaw, and means for locking the movable jaw against movement.
2. A device of the kind described comprising a base, having a recessed stationary jaw mounted thereon, the inner wall of said recess having a horizontal groove therein, and the base being slotted in advance of the jaw and in alinement with said groove, a pulley in the slot, a movable jaw having a stem sliding on said base and extending through the stationary jaw, a cord secured to the stem in the rear of the stationary jaw, and extending through the groove and over the pulley, and a weight secured to the free end of the cord.
3. A device of the kind described comprising a base having a recessed stationary jaw mounted thereon, said base having a plurality of longitudinal slots formed therein in advance of the jaw, pulleys arranged in the slots, a movable jaw having a stem sliding on the base through the stationary jaw, a cord secured to the stem in the rear of one of the slots and passing over the pulley in said slot, a weight secured to the free end of said cord, a treadle pivoted below the jaws, and a cord secured at one end to the movable jaw, in advance of one of thepulleys and passing over said pulley, the lower end of the cord being secured to the treadle.

A device of the kind described comprising a base-plate having a series of rack-teeth formed thereon, a recessed stationary jaw mounted on the base-plate,a movable jaw having a stem sliding in said recess of the stationary jaw, said stem being recessed and downwardly open, a block sliding in said stem, the said block having a longitudinal, threaded perforation and being recessed on its lower face, parallel lugs projecting rearwardly from the block, a pawl loosely pivoted in the recess of the block, a screw working in the threaded perforation. of the block, the said screw having a reduced threaded end to the rear of the block, an apert'ured plate fitting loosely on said screw, to the rear of the block, a beveled tooth on said plate adapted to bear on the rear end of the pawl, and a nut on the reduced end of the screw adapted to bear on the plate and force the tooth of the plate into engagement with the pawl when the screw is partially unscrewed.
