UN ITED STATES- ATENT Erica.
JOHN R. LONG, OF SPRINGFIELD TOYVNSHIP, SUMMIT COUNTY, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE JACOBSON MACHINE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF WARREN, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION.
PIPE-VISE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 714,208, dated November 1902- Application filed March 17, 1902. Serial No. 98,645. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN R. LONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield township, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pipe-Vises, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to improvements in that class of vises ordinarily used for holding metal pipes for cutting them into lengths, cutting threads on their ends, screwing together sections, and like operations required in gas-fitting, and hence known to the trade as pipe-Vises, although readily used for holding solid rods for any of the above or similar purposes. V
The object of my invention is to produce a vise revoluble on a fixed axis, usually vertical, in which the jaws may at will be arranged to move vertically or horizontally above or at the side of the fixed axis at any point aboutsaid axis, to adapt the vise to any position of the pipe to be operated on or which the necessities of its location may require, and to provide means whereby the revolution of the vise on its axis will be prevented and this motion locked by the act of tightening the jaws on the pipe or rod and released by opening the aws.
To the accomplishment of the aforesaid object my invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction, arrangement, and combi: nation of parts hereinafter described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference-numerals indicate like parts in both figures, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved vise adjusted to have the jaws move vertically, and Fig. 2 a central vertical section of the same.
Referring to the figures, 1 is the body of the vise} having an overhanging end 2, with an internally-screw-threaded opening in which runs a screw 3, in the head of which is a transverse opening in which'slides the handle 4:, having balls on the end in the usual manner to prevent its escape in either direction.
The lower end of the screw 3 is swiveled in extends slightly into the openings 10, 11, and
the upper or movable jaw 5, which has two integral projecting arms 6, that bear on 0pposite sides of a guide 7, formed on the front of the body and accurately dressed or planed.
The lower jaw 8 enters a recess or mortise in the body 1, in which it is retained bya pivot 9 and is so arranged therein that it may rock vertically for a short distance. This lower jaw is bifurcated, so that the upper jaw may descend between its sides.
The opposite adjacent faces of the upper and lower jaws are V-shaped in the usual manner of forming such jaws and serrated to afford a firm grip on the pipe or rod.
In the base of the body 1 are three round openings of like sizeviz., one, 10, vertical from the bottom upward, one, 11, transverse from side to side, and one, 12, from the back toward'the front, numbers 10 and 11 interseating and numbers 10 and 12 also intersecting. These openings fit a vertical post 13, that rises from a base 14:, which latter may be secured to a bench or other firm object.
The inner end of the lower jaw 8 normally 12; but in construction when it has been secured by the pivot 9 the outer end is rocked slightly upward, and this inner projecting end'is reamed accurately with said openings from each direction. Thus when the body is placed on the post 13 in either position this inner end of the jaw 8 afiords no resistance to the body revolving on the post as a pivot; but when any object is gripped between the jaws by the screw 3 the effect is to rock the outer end of the jaw down, and thus cause the inner end to bear against the post and lock the vise against revolution.
In the drawings and description the post 13 is treated as standing vertically; but this is not intended to be restrictive, as the base may,
if the requirements of the vise demand, be placed against a vertical surface, as will be readily understood from the foregoing description.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire. to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a vise of the kind specified the combination with a fixed post, of a body fitted to Ice be supported by and revolve thereon, having an overhanging internally screw threaded end, with a guide for the movable jaw, and a 'mortise for'the rockingjaw, a screw meshing in said overhanging end connected with and carrying a movable jaw, arranged to follow said guide, an oppositely-disposed rocking jaw pivoted in said mortise having a rearwardly-extending end arranged to engage the fixed post when the said jaw is rocked downward, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a vise of the kind specified, the com bination with a fixed post of a body having a vertical, a transverse and a from t-to-rear opening, said openings being of like size and arranged to fit said post, an overhanging, internally-screW-threaded head, with a guide for the movable jaW and a mortise for the JOHN R. LONG.
