PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS SOIJBERG, OF MASON, WISCONSIN.
DETACHABLE CONNECTION FOR CHAlNs.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 738,498, dated September 8, 1903.
Application filed April 13, 1903. Serial No. 152,465. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS SOLBERG, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Mason, in the county of Baylield and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Connections for Chains, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in a detachable connection for chains, and the main object of my invention is the provision of a device which is connected to one end of the chain and having means to engage any intermediate link thereof for such purposes as logging and lifting.
To attain the desired objects the invention consists of a device of this character embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as disclosed herein.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the device with its jaws locked. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the jaws open, the pivoted bail being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the device, and Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the device.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the shackle, which is connectedto the two oppositely-arranged disks B and C by means of a pin D. The disk 13 has formed integral therewith the depending arm E, which is provided upon its lower extremity with the enlarged portion F, provided with the inner abutment or projection G and the inclined plane H, a recess J being provided upon the opposite side thereof. The other disk 0 has depending therefrom an arm K, having a similar enlarged end L, )rovided with an oppositely-arranged projection M and inclined face N, which is adapted to interlock with the corresponding portions of the other jaw. This enlarged end is provided with an opening, in which is mounted a pin 0, to which is pivotally connected the ends of the U -shaped bail P, which is provided with the channel Q, in which is mounted the spring'actuated dog or detent B, to which a pull cord may be connected to release the dog from engagement with the recess J of the enlarged portion F when the jaws are closed.
From the foregoing description it is evident that I provide a device which is readily and quickly connected .to or disconnected from the intermediate link of a chain, the position of which is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
It is evident that I provide a device of this character which is very simple, durable, and inexpensive and which in use will prove to be thoroughly efficient and practical.
What I claim as new is 1. A device of the character described, com= prising a pair of pivoted jaws, a shackle c011- nected to the pivot thereof, one of said jaws being provided with a recess in the lower end thereof, a bail pivotally connected to the lower end of the other jaw, and means carried by said bail to engage the recess of the other jaw when the jaws are together.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a pair of pivoted jaws, a shackle con nected to the pivot thereof, one of said jaws being provided with a recess in the lower end thereof, a bail pivotally connected to the lower end of the other jaw, and a springactu'ated detent mounted in the bail adapted to engage the recess of the other jaw when the jaws are together.
A device of the character described, co1nprising a pair of jaws, each one of which is provided with a circular disk at one end and an angular projection at the other end, a pivot passing through said circular disks of the jaws and projecting upon each. side of the outer faces thereof, a shackle surrounding the ends of the jaws and connected to the pivot, one of said jaws being provided with a recess in the free end thereof, a bail pivotally connected to the free end of the other jaw and means carried by said bail adapted to engage the recess of the other jaw when the jaws are together.
4. A device of the character described, comprising a pair of jaws, each one of which is provided with a circular disk, an angular prosaid recess when the bail is surrounding the 10 free ends of both jaws.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JULIUS SOLBERG.
jection at the other end adapted to interlock with each other when the jaws are together, one of the jaws being provided with a recess in the lower free end thereof, a pivot passing 5 through said circular disks of the jaws, a
shackle pivotally secured to said pivot exteriorly of the jaws, a bail pivotally connect- Vitnesses: ed to the lower free end of the other jaw, and ANTON J OHNsEN, means carried by the bail adapted to enter 0. M. CEXNEss.
