Description
J, R. TARNER.
SNAP HOOK.
. APPLICATION FILED MAY 24, 1921.
1,406,911 I Patented Feb. 14, 1922.
%%. INVENTOR ATTORNEY WITNESSES:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN R. TARNER, OF SPARKS, NEVADA.
SNAP HOOK.
i noon 1 i.
To all 10 7mm it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN R. Tannnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sparks, in the county of \Vashoe and State of Nevada, have invented new and useful improvements in Snap Hooks, of which the i'ollowing is a specification.
"My present invention has reference to a sna) hook.
h y object is to simplify and improve the existing art by producing a snap hook in which a member provided with spaced fixed jaws has a spring influenced pin passing therebetween and a lever for moving the pin against the influence or the spring for bringing the same from between the jaws.
Other objects and advantages will. present themselves as the nature of the invention is better understood, reference being had to the drawings which accompany and which form part 01' this specification.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement.
Figure 2 is an approximately central vertical longitudinal sectional. view through the same.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates the body of the improvement. The bocy has one of its ends formed with an eye 2 from which projects a shank 3 that is formed with longitudinally extending parallel jaws eland 5 respectively. Preferably the jaw 5 is or a greater length than the aw i, and both oi the jaws are rounded at their ends to provide a flared mouth between the jaws. The jaw 5 has an opening 6 therethrough, and the jaw 4: has a depression on its inner face, indicated by the numeral 7 and arranged opposite the opening.
Passing through the opening 6, and normally received in the depression 7 is a pin 8. This pin is formed on one end of an arm 9. The arm has an ofiset portion 10 that passes through an elongated slot 11 in. the shank 3, and that is pivoted in the said slot, as at 12. The outer end of the offset portion is formed with an angle extension 13, arranged parallel to the arm 9, and terminating in a flat head 14. Thus I provide a substantially Ushaped member which constitutes the arms 9 and 13, the
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented F b 14 1922 Application filed May 2 1921. Serial No. 472,171.
connecting element 10 between the arms, the arm 9 being either bent uponitseli or otherwise having secured thereto the pin 8. Between the arm 13 and the jaw there is a spring 15 which swings the U-shaped member to bring the outer arm 13 thereof at an outward inclination with respectto the jaw 5, the second arm 9 075 the said ti-shaped member against the jaw 1, and thus forcing the pin through the opening in the jaw 5 into the depression 7 in the aw a. A pressure on the head 14 will swing the U-shaped member in an opposite direction to bring the pin from between the jaws, the pin, however, never leaving the opening It is, of course, obvious that the pin can be pivotally connected to the arm 9 of the U-shaped member, and it is believed that the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawings will fully set forth the construction and advantages thereof. i
It will be obvious that the link of a chain or the like held by the pin 8 will be released when the head piece 14- is forced toward the jaw 4, and that the chain or like rticle engaged by the pin will readily drop into the hand of the operator, and also that no slack in the chain is required to effect this release.
i-la ingdescribed the invention, I claim 1. in a device for the purpose set forth, a member having two parallel spaced jaws, a spring influenced pin slidable through one of the jaws and in contacting engagement with the other jaw, and a lever associated with said pin for moving the same from between the jaws. i
9.. A device of the class described including a slotted shank having spaced parallel jaws, a substantially U-shaped member pivoted in the slotted shank and having its arms disposed over but out of engagement with the jaws, a pin on one of the arms passing through an opening in one of the jaws and received in a depression in the opposite jaw, and a spring between the second jaw and the second arm of the U-shaped member for swinging the latter for normally retaining the pin between the jaws.
In testimony whereof I a'liix my signature.
JOHN R. TAR-NEE.
