"PATENT OFFICE.
PUMP FOR ARTESIAN WELLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 735,661, dated August 4, 1903. Application iiled September 30, 1901. Serial No. 77,033. (No model.)
T0 all whom, it nuby'colwern:
Be it known that 1, THOMAS H. GALLAGHER, acitizen ofthe United States of A1nerica,residing at Carnegie, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps for Artesian Vells, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention comprises a valve-casing consisting of lower and upper members detach- 1 ably secured together, the lower member havlocking lugs or iins at its lower end beneath the partition and an annular iiange seating on the annular flange of the partition, a cap having a central rod-opening and secured to the collar, an upper member with which a section of the pump barrel or tube is connected and `receiving the upper end of the collar and having a lower end formed with an annular series of upper valve-recesses located above the lower valve-recesses spaced from the partition and fitting in the upper end of the lower member, and valves adapted to play in the space between the lower and upper valve-recesses, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in whichl Figure 1 is in part a side elevation and in part a Vertical longitudinal section of my improvement-in pumps for Artesian wells. Fig. Y
2 is a top plan view of the lower member, the
` guide-sleeve and ball-valves being omitted.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the guide-sleeve. Fig. 4 is a bottom view thereof.
10 is the working barrel or tube of a pump for Artesian wells, having an interiorly-screwthreaded upper end 11, receiving the eXteriorly-screw-threaded neck 12 of the lower member 13 of a valve-casing. This lower member 13 has an interiorly-screw-threaded upper end 14 and a partition 15, providing a lower inlet-chamber 16 and an upper outlet.- chamber 17.
The partition 15 is formed with a central rod-opening 18 and an annular ange 19, having radial recesses 2O and surrounding the central rodopening 18, an annular series of orifices 21, each having a lower hemispherical valve-recess 22 and located between the central rod-opening 18 and the wall of the lower member 13, and an eXterorly-screwthreaded collar 23, surrounding the central rod-opening 18.
24 represents a series of ball-valves normally seated in the .lower valve-recesses 22 in the upper outlet-chamber 17. Vithin the collar 23 and projecting downwardly into the lower inlet-chamberl is a depending guidesleeve 25 for the pump-rod 26, provided with radial wedge-shaped locking lugs or fins 27 at its lower end and an annular supportingflange 28, located contiguous to the locking lugs or fins and seating on the annular ange 19. The guide-sleeve 24 is seated within the collar 23 by bringing the locking lugs or fins 27 into position over the radial recesses, which will permit its lower end to pass through the central' rod-opening 18. The space between the upper en d of the guide-sleeve 25 and the collar 23 provides a chamber 29, into which suitable material may be placed to furnish a packing for the pump-rod 26. This chamber 29 is closed by an interiorly-screwthreaded flanged cap 30, having a central rodopening 31 and secured to the collar 23.
32 is the upper member of the casing, having a central chamber 33 and an exteriorlyscrew-threaded lower end 34 fitted in the interiorly-screw-threaded upper end 14 of the lower member 13, having upper hemispher: ical valve-recesses 35 for the receptionof the ball-valves 24, which play across the outletchamber 17 fromA their spaced recesses.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to protect by Letters Patent:
A pump for Artesian wells comprising a IOO lower member formed with a neck at its lower end, a partition dividing the lower member into a lower inlet-chamber and an upper outlet-chamber, and having, a central rod-opening, an annular Iiange located at the base of the central rod-opening and having radial recesses, an upwardly-extending collar providing an extension to and surrounding the central rod-opening, and an annular series of orifices each having a hemispherical recess and located between the collar and the wall of the lower member, a guidesleeve having' its upper end located within the central rod-opening, and its lower end depending from the partition and formed with radial locking-fins and an annular flange spaced from the locking-fins and seating on the annular fiauge of the partition, a cap having a THOMAS H. GALLAGIIER.
