SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,899, dated August 9, 1898. Application filed June 28; 1897. Serial No. 842,648. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.- I
.Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. OTTNEY, of Gibsonburg, in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Vvell-Casin g IIeads and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has reference to new and useful improvements in heads for oil-well casings; and it consists in novel arrangement-s of simple elements, ashereinafter described, and more particularly set forth in the appended claim. 7 r
The object of my invention is to provide a head for oil-well casing that will be simple in construction and efficient in operation.
Further objects and advantages of my invention will become apparent in the course of the following description, and the points of novelty will be pointed out in the claim.
The objects of my invention I am enabled to accomplish by means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved casing-head with the slide or cap in position for running the oil into tanks provided for the purpose. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the head with the slide partially withdrawn. Fig. 3 is a similar section showing the ring and cap used to diminish the flow of oil to the tanks and when it is desired to let the flow of oil through the top of the head, and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the cap and ring for diminishing the size of the opening in the casing-head and enabling the oil to flow or be pumped from the top of the casing-head. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the slide or cap removed from the casing-head.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates my improved casing-head, which comprises a body provided at its lower portion with external screw-threads 2,which are adapted to be received in internal screwthreads provided in'the top of the casing, and an enlarged upper portion 3, which is provided with two holes 4, which are internally screw-threaded for the reception of tank connecting pipes 5.
The numeral 6 indicates a slot which is provided in the side of the upper portion 3 and adapted to receive a sliding cap 7, provided upon its upper edges With upwardly-projecting lugs or teeth 8, which are adapted to engage with similar downwardlyprojecting teeth or lugs on the under side of the recess 9 to prevent the gate or slide from being pressed backward and out of the slot when it is being inserted in said recess to stop the flow of the oil through the top of the head through the tubular opening 10, made in said head.
The numeral 11 indicates three set-screws which are adapted to enter holes in the upper edge of the casing-head and extend obliquely through the upper enlarged portion of the head into the recess 9, where their ends ongage with the upper sides of the slide 7 and press said slide downwardly until it fits snn gl y over the tubular opening 10.
The under side of the slide 7 is provided with a packing-ring 11, of rubber, felt, or other soft material, which is adapted to make a close contact with the floor of the chamber or recess 9 when the set-screws are screwed down upon said slide.
WVhen the slide has been inserted in the recess 9 and pushed in until it comes in con" tact with the rear edge of said recess, a pin 12 is inserted in a hole 13, bored in the upper edge of the head and over the center of slot 7 and passes through ahole made in an extension of the gate and into a hole or depression 14 in the easing-head for the purpose of locking the slide in position and against backward movement.
The numeral 15 indicates a ring provided with perforations 16 and an extension or handhold 17. The ring is adapted to enter the recess 9 through the slot 6 and, in conjunc" tion with the cap 18, formed with a flange'lJ, serves to diminish the size of the opening in the casing-head, thus diminishing the flow of the oil through the top of the head and providing means for pumpor other connections with said head. i
When the ring 15 is in position in the re cess, the same is held in by set-screws in a manner similar to the slide 7, the set-screws entering the perforations 16 in the ring.
It will be seen that when the ring is in position in the recess the flange 19 of the perforated cap 18 will fit snugly within the ring and upon a shoulder in 22, and, if found desirable, a packing-ring 21, of rubber or other yielding material, may be provided between the ring 15 and the cap 18.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An oil-well-casing head, comprising a body provided at its lower portion with screwthreads, an upper enlarged portion provided with a recess, the upper wall of which is provided with serrations on its under side, a gate provided on its upper side with serrations adapted to engage with said serrations in the head, and a pin to further secure the said gate in position, substantially as shown and described.
