HAT-
PIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 723,781, dated March 24, 1903. Application filed October 18, 1901. Serial No. 79,175. (No model.)
To (LZZ whom it may concern:-
Be it known that I, HORACE J. NICKETT, of Attleboro, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spring Hat-Pins, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a hat-pin in which the ornamental head is connected with the, stem by means of a spring, whereby the head will have a tremulous movement when the hat is being worn; and my invention consists in the improved construction of the spring and its containing box, as hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents an enlarged side view of a spring hat-pin embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal side section. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal edge section. Fig. 4 represents a section taken in the line 4 4.- of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, 0. represents the stem of the pin b, a double-ended connectinghead secured to the said stem.
c is a volute spring having its lower end socured in the bore of the connecting-head b and its upper end secured in the socket d of the ornamental head A of the hat-pin. The box 9, which incloses the spring 0, is made in two parts 6 e which are rolled together at their edges 11, as shown in Fig. 4, and provided with the openingf of sufficient extent to allow of the required movement ofthe arm 9 of the spring, whereby the ornamental head A of the pin may move from side to side and up and down, so as to give the tremulous effect desired by the wearer, the lower arm h of the spring being rigidly held in the conmeeting-head b.
I secure the spring 0, box 6, and the stem a together by swaging the sides of the connecting-head 1) upon the same, as shown in the drawings. The employment of a volute spring inclosed in an ornamental bo'x provides a desirable improvement in spring hatplus;
I claim as my invention In a spring-hat-pin, the combination of the stem, and the connecting-head, with the V0- -1ute spring held at one end by the connectinghead, the box inclosing the volute coil of the spring and having an opening at its edge for the loose movement of the free arm of the spring, and the ornamental head secured to the projecting end of the free arm, substantially as described.
