DOUBLE-SEAT KNOCKDOWN CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 7l9,837, dated February 3, 1903.
Application filed December 6, 1901. Serial No. 84,919. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HEZEKIAH MORTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Thomasville, in the county of Davidson and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and Improved Double-Seat Knockdown Chair, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to knockdown furniture; and its object is to provide a new and improved double-seat knockdown chair arranged to permit of packing into a comparatively small space for'shipping, storing, and
other purposes and to allow the user or the purchaser to readily set up and connect the several parts to form a chair of great durability and strength.
Theinvention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be f ul'iy described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan View of the improvement, showing the several parts disconnected. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, the parts being connected; and Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
The chair consists, essentially, of the front legs A A, connected with each other by the upper and lower rounds B B, and the rear legs 0 0, connected similarly with each other by the upper and lower rounds D D. The upper, front, and rear rounds B D, in addition to connecting the legs, serve to support the seat-frame, as hereinafter described. The corresponding front and rear legs A O and A G are connected with each other by the lower side round E E, and the seat-frame is provided with the upper side rounds F F, having reduced ends F for engaging corresponding front and rear legs A O and A O, as will be readily understood by reference to the drawings. The inner faces of the upper side rounds F F are flattened, and on the flattened sides are secured, by screws or other means, the arms G G, formed with front and rear ends G G of which the front ends G are cut out so as to fit snugly against the sides of the front legs A A, and the ends G are similarly out out to fit the inside of the rear legs 0 O. The ends G2 are connected with each other by the upper round H, and the ends G are similarly connected by an upper rear round H, said rounds H and H having their ends adapted to abut against the inner sides of the front and rear legs A A and O O to give the desired rigidity to the chair when the several partsareassembled. TheendsGFhavedownward extensions G (see Figs. 2 and 3) to rest on the round B, and similar extensions G are arranged on the rear ends G3 to rest on top of the round D.
It will be seen that a seat-frame constructed in the manner described can be readily connected to the front. and rear legs by engaging the reducedends F of the rounds F F with corresponding apertures in said front and rear legs. It will also be noticed that the seat-frame is exceedingly strong and durable in construction to properly support the seat secured to the seat-frame.
It will be understood that in manufacturing the double-seat chair the seat-frame parts are connected together in the factory. Also the front legs and the rear legs and the said parts, together with the lower side rounds E E, can be convenientlypacked and shipped and the receiver or user can readily connect and glue the reduced ends F in the front and rear legs AA 0 C, and likewise attach the rounds E E to complete the chair.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. A chair, comprising front legs connected by rounds, rear legs connected by rounds and a seat-frame having side rounds for engaging corresponding front and rear legs, side arms secured to the side rounds and having their ends fitting the inner sides of the front and rear legs, said ends of the side arms having downward extensions for resting on the upper cross-rounds of the front and'rear legs, and transverse front andrear rounds held in the ends of said side arms, as set forth.
2. A chair-seat for knockdown chairs, consisting of side bars having their ends cut away on their outer faces and provided with downwardly-projecting extensions on said ends, front and rear rounds secured in the cut-away ends of the side bars and connecting the same, and side rounds secured to the outer faces of the side bars and having their ends terminating short of the cut-away ends of the side ing the front and rear legs and having their ends fitting against the inner faces of the I5 legs and resting upon the upper front and rear rounds, and rounds connecting the front and rear ends of the arms, as set forth.
