J. SHORT.
CHAIR.
No. 326;165.- Patented Sept. l5, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
JOHN SHORT, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters 4Patent No. 326,165, dated September 15, 1885,
Application filed July 23, 1883. (No model.)
T all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN SHORT, of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chairs; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in the construction of eh'airs5and the object of the invention is to provide a common chair with a spring attachment which at small cost will greatly increase the comfort ofthe occupant of the chair and convert such chair into a kind of rocker.
My invention consists, mainly, in a chair provided with telescoping legs, and with a spring interposed between the chair-seat and the legfwhich permits such seat to yield vertically, and, further, in details of construction shown in the accompanying drawings, and hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the said drawings, Figure l is afront` elevation of achai'r. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of one of the chair-legs.
A represents a chair-bottoni of any pre ferred construction.
BB represent hollow legs or sleeves secured to the bottom, one at each corner.
C C are solid legs adapted to telescope within the legs B B and to slide freely therein. These are the supportinglegs proper of the chair, and rest upon the floor. The sleeves B B are slotted, as shown at b, and within these slots AWork the free ends of leaf-springs a a., y
the centers of such springs being secured to thechair-bottom. The ends of the springs rest upon the tops of the solid legs C O, there being `necessarily one of the springs for each `forced upward.
I am aware that hitherto separate spiral springs have beeninclosed in each hollowleg surrounding a solid leg, by which the chairseat receives an elastic support.
For some kinds of chairs I may prefer to dispense with the leaf-springs and employa single coil-spring for each leg.
` Having described my invention, I claim- `Combined with a chair-seat, thehollow legs B, having the slot b, the solid legs C within `the said hollowr legs, and leafsppings a, one for each pair of legs, secured atV the middle to the chair-bottom, and having their ends extending through the slots b and resting on the solid legs, substantiallyT as described.
In testimony whereof Ihave signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN SHORT.
