SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,872, dated January 20, 1903.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN PEDERSON and MARTIN GIswoLD, of Grantsburg, Burnett c0unty,l/Visconsin, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in lVrenches, of which the following is a specification.
Ourinvention relates to wrenches, and par ticularly to that type known as monkeywrenches; and the primary object of ourinvention is to provide a wrench in which provision is made for agreater separation of the fixed and movable jaws than is customary in tools of this kind.
A further object is to provide a wrench in which the movable jaw has a broad bearingsurface on the shank and is provided with a locking device which is adapted to firmly lock the movable jaw wherever it is adjusted.
A further object is to provide a wrench having a movable jaw that can be easily and quickly adjusted to the different positions required.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of a monkey-wrench embodying ourinvention, the movable jaw being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the movable jaw and a portion of the shank, showing the jaw locked thereon. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the jaw unlocked and ready to be moved. Fig. 4 is a detail of the locking-block provided on the movable jaw. Fig. 5 is a view of the under or toothed side of the sliding block.
In the drawings, 2 represents the fixed jaw, provided on the shank 3, having a suitable handle 4.
5 is a toothed rack-bar secured to the edge of the shank 3, and 6 represents the movable jaw, slidable on said shank over the bar 5 and having a face to cooperate with the face of the fixed jaw on one side to clamp the heads of bolts or of nuts between them, and on the opposite side said movable jaw has a corrugated face 7, that is adapted to cooperate with the opposite face of the fixed jaw to permit the tool to be used as a pipe-wrench.
The movable jaw is provided with a recess 8, in the bottom of which I provide ablock 9, having on its under side a series of teeth 10, that are adapted to engage the teeth of the rack 5. These teeth, as shown, are prefer- "ably tapered or beveled at one end of the block to facilitate their engagement with the teeth of the rack bar. The block is provided on the top with a longitudinal rib 11, having a diagonal slot 12 therein, and above said block is an oscillating lever 18, having a hub 14, mounted in hearings in the movable jaw and provided with a spiral web or rib 15, that is adapted to enter the slot 12 and travel therein when the lever is oscillated. A spring 16, secured to one side of the movable jaw, bears upon the end of the block 9 and normally holds the same within its socket in the movable jaw and in engagement with the teeth of the rack-bar. When, however, it is desired to move the jaw, the lever 13 is thrown to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1 and full lines in Fig. 3 and the block will be moved lengthwise or laterally with respect to the shank until its teeth are out of engagement with the teeth of the rack. The movable jaw can then be slid along to any desired position, and as soon as the lever is thrown back to its normal position the block will be returned by the pressure of the spring. We are thus able to quickly adjust the movable jaw on the shank and securely lock it in any desired position.
The device may be modified in various ways as regards the details of construction, and hence we do not wish to be confined to the exact form and arrangement of the mechanisms herein shown.
l/Ve claim as our invention- 1. The combination, in a monkey-wrench, with a shank provided with a toothed rackbar, of a movable jaw slidably arranged on said shank, a spring-pressed block having teeth to engage said rack-bar, a rib provided on said block and havingadiagonalslot, and a lever mounted in said movable jaw above said block and provided with a spirally-arranged rib to enter said slot, substantially as described.
2.
