CHARLES WV. EVANS, OF MEGE, NORH CAROLINA.
RATCHET STOCK AND DIE.
Patented Sept. 5, 1905.
Application filed February 25, 1905. Serial No. 247,335.
To II-ho/It if lit/ concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES 1V. EVANS, a C1l3lZ6n of the United States, residing at Mege, in the county of Ghowan and State of North (,arolina, have invented new and useful 1m? provements in Ratchet Stocks and Dies, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ratchet stocks and dies of the type employed for cutting threads,
IO and has for its objects to produce a comparatively simple inexpensive device of this char: actor in which the cutting-dies maybe readily interchanged, one wherein the ratchet-head carrying the die may be driven in either direction, and one in which the pawls adapted for operating the head may be turned to and securely locked in inactive position.
\Vith these and other objects in view the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a device embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a view partly in section, the
-section being taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. i.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the ratchet-head and adjacent parts. Fig. 4: is a section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is aside elevation showing the manner of removing or in- Fig. 6 is a detail side elevation of the wrench carried at one end of the stock. Fig. 7 is a detail view of the wrench-head.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a steel; or handle provided at one end with a pair of spaced annular jaws 2 and 3, of which the jaw 2 is fixed, while the jaw 3 is pivoted at 1 to a bracket-arm 5, fixed upon the jaw 9., the jaw being adapted to swing to open or 4 closed position and to be locked in the latter position by means of a thumb-screw or other fastening member 6, threaded through an ear 7, which [its flush within a correspondinglyshaped socket or recess 8, formed in the stock The jaws 2 and 3 are adapted to receive between them for rotation a die 9, provided with internal thread-cutting members .10 and with an external peripheral flange or projection 11, disposed centrally between the ends 5 of the die, and having formed at its marginal edge ratchet-teeth 12, adapted for engagement by pawls 13, pivoted, respectively, adjacent opposite edges of the stock and within a recess 1%. formed in the latter, there being extended into said recess leaf-springs 15, which bear, respectively, upon the pawls. Each of the pawls 13 is formed, as seen more clearly tcr between the ratchet-teeth 12 and has its end edge adjacent the pivot beveled or inclined, as at 17, for engagement by one of the springs 15 to hold the pawl in ratchet-engaging position, the spring being adapted when the pawl is thrown to inactive position to bear on one of the longitudinal edges of the pawl, thereby locking the latter in such position.
In practice the stock will be accompanied by a set of dies 9 for operation upon bodies of different diameters and for cutting threads of different pitch, and these dies may be readily interchanged when circumstances require and, as will be obvious, by manipulating the thumb-screw 6 to release the movable jaw 3 and permit of the latter being swung to the position illustrated in Fig. 5. \Vhen seated in the head between the jaws, the die may be rotated by engaging one or the other of the pawls 13 therewith, it being understood, of course, that the direction of rotation of the die will accord with the particular pawl which is brought into action, and, further, that the springs 15 subscrvc the twofold function of locking the pawls in either their active or inactive positions.
The normally rear end of the stock 1 is formed with a pair of spaced annular jaws which receive between them for rotation a rotary wrench-head 18, provided with a nut engaging opening 19 and having a flange 20, on the periphery of which is formed ratchetteeth 21, designed for engagement by either of a pair of pawls 22, designed to be maintained in active or inactive position through the medium of leaf-springs 23, the pawls 22 and springs 93 being identical in form and construction with the corresponding parts 13 and 15 heretofore described, it being apparent that in action the head 18 will be rotated in either direction according to the particular pawl which is brought into play,as in the instance of the die-heads 9 above described.
From the foregoing it is apparent that I produce a simple inexpensive device admirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in view, it being understood that minor changes in the details herein set forth may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is In a device of the class described, a stock having a recess formed in one face thereof and provided with a pair of spaced annular jaws, with the face of, the stock, and a fastening one of said jaws being fixed and the other member threaded through the ear and into movable, a bracket-arm carried by the fixed the stock for securing the jaw in closed posijaw and having the movable jaw pivoted tion. 5 5 thereto to swing toward and from the fixed In testimony whereofIaflix my signature in jaw, a rlotatable heiad remgvxbly ieatedhbe- 1 presence of two witnesses.
