SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 717,872, dated January 6, 1903.

Be it known that I, WILLIE S. LENHART, a citizen of theUnited States,residingatBakersville, in the county of Somerset, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrench Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame.

This invention relates to wrenches in general; and it has for its object to provide in connection with an ordinary monkey-wrench a jaw which may be applied thereto or a jawfacing which will adapt thewrench for use as a pipe-wrench, a further object of the invention being to provide a construction which may be easily and quickly applied to and removed from the wrench and including a holding device with which may be engaged different jaws.

In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing a wrench equipped with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the supplemental jaw removed from the wrench. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the wrench and supplemental jaw.

Referring now to the drawings, the presentsupplemental jaw comprises a wedge-shaped block 5, the broadened end of. which in practice lies against the stem 6 of the wrench to which the jaw is attached, while the adjacent face 7 of the block, which is at right angles to the face against the stem of the wrench, lies against the gripping-face of the fixed jaw 8 of the wrench. The face 9 of the block, which lies at an acute angle to the face 7, is serrated transversely, the teeth, projecting slightly in the direction of the broadened end of the block.

From the side faces 10 and 11 of the wedgeshaped block, which is the supplemental jaw or facing,project the trunnions 12 and 13, which are in axial alinement and adjacent to the broadened end of the block, and these trunnions in practice are pivotally and removably engaged in bearings at the inner ends of slots 14, formed in the spaced mem I bers 15 and 16 of a U-shaped plate, which is disposed to inclose the stem of the wrench. Through the 'Web 17 of the U-shaped plate is engaged a thumb-screw 18, which is disposed to impinge the stem of the wrench and draw the broadened end of the supplemental jaw against the opposite face of the stem, so as to hold the supplemental jaw in position. The slots in the spaced members 15and 16 range in the directions of the free ends of the members, so that as the set-screw is operated to clamp the supplemental jaw in place the trunnions are moved into the inner ends of the slots, and when the supplemental jaw is clamped firmly the trunnions thereof are held against disengagement from the slot. With this construction it will be seen that the U- shaped plate may be engaged around the stem of the wrench, and the trunnions then engage in the slots, after which the set-screw may be turned up and will have the double function of holding the jaw against the stem of the wrench and holding the trunnions in the slots. Furthermore, when for any purpose it is desired to use a differentspecitic jaw such dif ferent jaw may be substituted. Thus one U- shaped clamping-plate will suffice for a variety of jaws, which maybe easily and quickly attached interchangeably to the wrench.

It will be understood that in practice modifications of the specific construction shown may be made and that any suitable materials and proportions may be used for the various parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.

What is claimed is 1. An attachment for wrenches comprising a supplemental jaw and a clamping member adapted to embrace the stem of a wrench and with which the supplemental jaw is removably engaged and means carried by the clamping member for holding the latter to the stem of the Wrench and for holding the jaw in ening in the directions of the ends of the plate, and a set-screw engaged with the clampingplate, said set-screw being disposed to impinge against the stem of the Wrench and draw and hold the jaw against the opposite face of the stem with the trunnions inthe slots.
