Be it known that I, JOHN POMEROY, a Britin order to prevent the same being blown off the head of the wearer.

The hat-pins at present in use by females are awkward, owing to their length, dangerous, owing to their sharpened points, and destructive to the hat on account of its being necessary to pierce the hat afresh with them every time it is worn.

The object of my invention is to provide a safe, efficient, and comfortable means of attaching the hat securely to the hair, at the same time being adjustable and easily manipulated both in attaching and detaching.

In the drawings the same numbers of reference indicate the same parts respectively. Figure 1 is an interior perspective view of a hat with the fastener in position when in operation. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the hat with one comb in position as fixed in the hair and the other drawn out ready for being so fixed. Fig. 3 is a plan of one of the combs with the adjustable bands shown as they would be between the comb and the hat in position on the hat. Fig. 4: is a section of the comb and band shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 illustrates one of the combs in use with guiding means, such as eyelets, attached to the hat surrounding a tooth at each end of the comb. Fig. 6 illustrates an eyelet. Fig. 7 illustrates the comb shown in position in Fig. 5. Fig. 8

illustrates one of the combs as used with a flange or lugs to the comb. Fig. 9 illustrates one of the combs as used with guiding means, such as an eyelet, at each end of the comb and a single elastic band attached to the mid- 5 dle of the comb.

I effect the objects before referred to by using a comb 1 l with curved teeth 2 2 and made to fit between the inside band 8 of the hat and. the head of the wearer and guided and prevented from ascending too far by an eyelet l4, surrounding a tooth of the comb at each end and attached to the hat. Its solid end or back 12 is also ribbed, as at 7 7, and flanges or lugs 15, Fig. 8, may be used, so that it can be readily laid hold of by the ends of the fingers when being manipulated. The flange or lugs also serve to engage the rim of the hat and prevent the comb ascending too. far.

Loops or tags may be attached to the backs of the combs to facilitate the withdrawal of same. I

The comb has slots 4 4 in it at each end, through which the ends of an elastic band 5 v5 are threaded and looped, these ends being attached *to the body of the band by means of clips 6 6, through which the band may be drawn to lengthen or shorten the position between the slots. may be used when an eyelet is used at each end of the comb, Fig. 9.

Studs or clips 3 may be placed inside the hat on each side and opposite each other to fasten the bands to the hat, and these studs or clips may be sewed on or they may be provided with pointed legs, so as to attach them to the hat by thrusting the pointed legs through the .hat and clenching them externally, or they maybe thrust through the hat from the outside, so as to clench the bands internally.

The elastic bands 5 5, carrying the combs 1 1, are attached at their middle points by the studs or clips 3 3 to the hat, or the bands may be sewed at their middle points to the hat, and the combs may then hang loosely inside the hat when the eyelets are not used. The teeth 16 of the combs that are surrounded by eyelets are made preferably longer than the others to afford a longer travel.

The invention is operated as follows: When the eyelets are not used, the hat is held by the sides and some fingers of each hand are placed through the triangular loops formed bythe elastic bands and are hooked over the backs of the combs and the thumbs are placed on the concave sides of the combs, thus holding them tightly. The combs are then pulled out close to the sides of the hat by stretching the elastic bands until they are some distance outside the hat and the backs of the fingers rest on its brim. The hat is then placed on the head of the wearer, the combs are turned, so that the elastic bands are between them and the hat and their concave sides are toward the head, the teeth of the combs being A single adjustable band 17 'in the hair.

The combs are then released, and the elastic bands draw them up between the inside band of the hat and the head, and they become fastened When eyelets are used, the combs are normallyin the position they take when in operation, and they are laid hold of by the flange, the lugs, or the ribs and are drawn down and then allowed to ascend, being manipulated in their ascent so as to take a firm hold of the hair. The eyelets are fixed to the hat, so as to prevent the combs ascending into the hat more than is desired. The elastic bands may be adjusted by altering the position of the studs or the point of their attachment to the hat or by varying the length of the bands or when eyelets are used by altering their point of attachment to the hat, so that portions of the combs may be seen beneath the hat and in the hair or so that the combs may be wholly concealed within the hat. To detach the hat when no eyelets are used, one of the combs is taken hold of with the fingers at the ribbed back or by the flange or lugs and is pulled down slightly and reversed, then released, whereupon the elastic band draws it up, with the back uppermost, into the hat, and the hat maybe removed sidewise toward the other comb, which is pulled out as the hat comes off. When eyelets are used, the combs are laid hold of and pulled downward out of the hair and the hat is removed, the combs then being drawn back by the elastic bands into their normal position.

The combs may be more than two in numher and may be attached at the back or sides of the hat, as may be found convenient to the wearer; but I prefer to place them at the sides of the hat.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In combination, a comb, an elastic band in two parts, one end of each of said parts being attached to an extremity of the comb and said parts converging from points near the ends of the comb toward each other, means for the separate adjustment of said two parts as to length and means for attaching said elastic band at the junction of said parts to a hat.
