HAT RETAINING DEVICE Filed Oct. 18, 1938 INVENToR Morrzerd Solar/1012s ATTORNEY Patented May 9, 1939 UNI-TED: STATES PATENT OFFICE@ Mortimerl J. Solomons, New York, N. Y.
Application October 18, 1938,-.Serial-'N`m 235,552
6 Claims.
This invention relates to new anduseful improvements in a hat retaining device.
The invention proposes the construction of hat retaining devices characterized by the provision of an elastic loop for attachment to a ladys hat and having a hairpin supported thereon in a novel manner to be engaged into the hair in a particular manner for holding the hat on the head.
Still further it is proposed to provide the hairpin with a-loop portion at its back end through which the elastic loop is adapted to be passed.
Another object of this invention is to form the elastic loop from a length of elastic material, doubled in half, and having its ends securely attached together. and inserted between the adjacent faces of the headsize band and the lower portion of the crown ofthe hat.
Still further it is proposed to provide a means for releasably connecting the elastic loop to the hat in such a manner that the entire loop and hairpin may be removedl therefrom 'When desired.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a means for releasably connecting the elastic loop to a clip which in turn is adapted to be releasably connected with the hat in a particular manner.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a handle member, formed in the hairpin, to facilitate the removing of the hairpin from the wearers head.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. l is a rear elevational view of a headl and a hat having a hat retaining device constructed according to this invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken. on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
taining device constructedv according to a still further modification of the invention.
Fig. 8 is a sectional view taken on the line 8-8 of Fig. 7.
Fig. 9 is aperspective view of one of the ends of the elastic loop.
Fig. 10 is a similar view to Fig. 3, but illustrating anotherform of hairpin.
The hat retaining'device, according to this invention, includes an elastic loop IIJ for attachment on aV ladysl hat Il in the vicinity of the headsize band I2. The elastic loop I Il is constructed from a length of elastic material having its ends securely attached together by means of stitches I3 passing therethrough. The secured ends of the loop Ill are adapted to be inserted between the adjacent faces of 'the crown of the hat I I and the headsize Icand`l2.V preferably one at each side or at the back of the hat. After the loop hasrbeen inserted betweenthe adjacent faces of the headsize'band and the crown of the hat the headsize band I2 may be secured inl position in the customary4 manner' by means of stitches I4 which will also pass through the endsV of the loop ID, maintainingthem fxedly in position.
A` hairpin I5 is slidably engaged upon the loop II] and is adapted to be insertedinto the hair for maintaining the hat I I in position upon ones head. The pin I5 is formed with a looped portion lia through which the elastic loop- I0 freely engages.v
The operation of this form of the as follows:
The hat I I is rst properly positioned upon the head, the pin I5 is grasped in the fingers in the vicinity of the loop portion I5a and pulled outward and downward, stretching the elastic loop I0. The pin I5 is then turned to directthe front ends thereof towards-the hair permitting the resiliency of the elastic loop to urge the pin I5 into the hair for maintaining the hat in position upon the head.
According to the modification of the invention shown in 4 to 6 inclusive, a clip I6 having an opening IIa is provided with clamp portions IIb which are adapted toA be attached upon the ends of the elastic loop I0. As shown in Fig. 6 the clamp portion I6b .consists of a rectangular extension formed on one side of the clip I6V and which is adapted to be rolled around the ends of thel elastic loopr I0 in the manner shown in Fig. 5.
With thisr construction it is possible to releasinvention is ably connect the elastic loop IU with the; hat IIA Alil so that it may be removed therefrom when desired. This releasable connection is accomplished by means of a snap fastener II. One element IIa of the snap fastener I 'I is secured to the inside face of the crown of the hat. The other element I'Ib of the snap fastener II is securely attached to the adjacent face of the headsize band I2 (see Fig. 4). The headsize band in the vicinity of the snap fastener element I1 is free from the crown of the hat with the stitches I4 extending completely around the hat, except for the area in the vicinity of the snap fastener II. In the engaged position of the snap fastener elements IlZ1 and I'!b there is sufficient space between the adjacent faces thereof, as shown in Fig. 4, to permit the clip I6 to be inserted therebetween.
In other respects this form of the invention is similar to the previous form.
According to the modification of the invention shown in Figs. 7 9 inclusive a clip I6 consists of a portion having the opening IS2L and which continues into a base section ISC. A separate top section Itd is adapted to be releasably connected with one of the faces of of the base section |60. This attachment is accomplished by means of headed pegs I8 which extend from the base section I 6C and which engage through slots I9 formed in the ends of the top section Id.
The ends of the elastic loop IU have rectangular elements 20 of felt or similar material securely attached thereto by means of stitches 2l. The rectangular elements 28 are adapted to be inserted and clamped between the adjacent faces of the base section IGC and the top section I6d when the pegs I9 are engaged into the bayonet slots I9. The top section IBd is formed with a plurality of inwardly extending prongs IGdd which are adapted to engage into and frictionally maintain the rectangular elements 20 in position between the adjacent faces of the base section I6c and the top section |611.
The operation of this form of the invention is as follows:
The top section ISGl is removed from the base section I6c by disengaging the pegs I8 from the bayonet slots I9. After this removal the rectangular elements 20 are positioned upon the face of the base section I6c between the pegs I8. The top section Id is then positioned upon the rectangular elements 2D with the prongs Iidd thereof engaging into the elements 20 permitting the pegs to be re-engaged into the openings I9 for xedly holding the rectangular elements 20 in position upon the base section |60. In other respects this form of the invention is similar to the previous forms.
In Fig. 10 the hairpin I5 is illustrated with a looped portion |521 formed integrally with and at one side of the hairpin I5', so that the loop I5aa projects inwardly and is in the same plane with the plane formed by the two side portions 0f the hairpin. In this form of the invention the connecting portion I5 of the hairpin extends beyond the loop portion I5aa so that it may be readily gripped and used as a handle for removing the hairpin from the wearers head. The loop I5aa also acts as an abutment for the opposite side of the hairpin to ascertain that the free ends of the hairpin, are spaced from one another.
It is to be understood that any desired number of hairpin units may be used, for retaining the hat in position and that the length, color and construction of the elastic loop may also be varied as desired.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the Scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
