SOFA-BED.

SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent N0. 715,114, dated December 2, 1902 Application liled November 2, 1901. Serial No. 80,846. (No model.)

Be it known that I, ALTON H. MOOERS, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Elyria, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sofa-Bedsteads, of 'which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in sofa-bedstcads in which the back of a sofa is let down into a horizontal position and in combination with the seat forming the .foundation for a bed; andthe object of my in vention is to provide suchja bed as ,will be simple and cheap in construction, easily operated, unlikely to get out of repairs, and can be used as a sofa when not used as a bed, easily convertible when desired, and sightly in appearance. I attain these objects by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a perspective View of my invention when converted into the form of a sofa. Fig. 2 is a cross end section showing the position and relation of the parts when converted into a bed. Fig. 3 is a cross end section showing the position'and relation of the parts when used asa sofa. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the framework of the bed, and Fig. 5 is a detailed view of locking device.

A and A represent the parts forming the seat and back, respectively, of a sofa when so used, as shown in Fig. l, and which form the mattress or foundation for a bed when placed in position. (Shown in Fig.`2.) These parts are suitably hinged and connected together at their inner edges. They are together of suitable width to form a bed when lying dat or horizontally and of any desired length to freely slide between the ends B B. The ends B VB are of any suitable design, height, and width and rigidly connected together by means of the rails b b, which rails connecting-bars a a, pivoted at a suitable point on the back A. These bars a d should be connected at such a point on the endsof the bedstead and to the back A' and of such a length that when the front half A is pushed back on the frame the rear part A will be `held up at a suitable height to form the back of a sofa and when dropped down will hold the inner edges of the parts A and A in the longitudinal center of the bed-frame. To Jthe under front edge and near the ends of the part A ratchet teeth are secured. These teeth act against the front longitudinal rail b. The latter will serve as a stop-pawl when the seat is pushed back andfhold the seat A from sliding forward on the frame of the bedstead. Vhen engaged, they can be easily disengaged by lifting up on the part A, and thereby raise or lower the back part A', as desired, by eitherl pushing back or pulling forward on the seat A.

To'the lower sides and front edge near the ends of the back A are attached hooks c c with an opening in the forward end and which hook under the ears c c, rigidly secured to the cross-bars O C when the bed parts A and A arein a horizontal position, thereby locking the center of the bed to the cross-bars O C and holding samefrom being raised by weight being applied to the outside edges of the bed parts A to A.

The parts A and A' are carried or slide across the frame of the bed on thecross-bars OO. The side and cross bars maybe made as wide as desired and the under part of the same may be covered with thin boards H or otherwise, and thereby form a suitable receptacle for bedding or other articles, which can be easily placed therein by raising the part A, 'asis obvious by inspection of the drawings. The operations of-myrinventi`on are simple and easy, as isobvious from theforegoing eX- planation and-on examination of the drawings; that thepartsA'andjA can be made and upholstered in any style to suit the user, and that-bysirnply drawing forward or pushing backward thepartA the change is made from a sofato a bed or from` a bed to a sofa. That different angles can be given as desired to the back Aby the different engagements with the ratchet-teeth a'.
