COMBINED INVALID BED AND CHAIR.
Application filed December 6, 1917. SeriaINo. 205,780. I
Be it known that I, EMERY H. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burton, in the county of Shiawassee and State vof Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Invalid Beds and Chairs; and I'do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the invention, such as will en-' able others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and usethe same. 7
This invention relates to improvements in combined invalid beds and chairs.
The object of this invention is to improve the construction of an invalid bed and chair so as to render the bed capable of being moved to an inclined position to'permit the patient, to be in a sitting position without bodily touching the invalid. y
k A still further object, of'this invention is to provide a combined invalid bed and chair which is equipped with means whereby'thei bed may be raised to an inclined position to permit the patientto readily sit up and'b'e supported in sitting up position without bodily touching the invalid or person,
. A still further object of this invention is to provide a combined bed and invalid chair which is equipped with novel means whereby the bed may be readily moved to an inclined position so as to give the patient a rest.
A still furtherobject of this invention is to provide acombined bed and invalid chair which includes a frame having-movable part therein and means to -move the parts for raising it from a bed into an .inclined' c-hair. A still further object of this invention is to provide a combined invalid bed and chair of this character, which will be simple, pracs tical and comparatively inexpensive in construction and one thatcan be manufactured and sold'at a low cost. j
With these and other objects in view, qthe invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and set forth in theclaims hereto appended. In the drawings; j y V Figure lis a perspective view of a com bined invalid bed and chair illustrating the bed in an inclined position to represent the chair. .;;;Fig. 2 is a side elevation of thesame representing the bed. Fig. a is a transverse sectional View.
Fig. 5 isa transverse sectional view taken through the seat portion of th'e bedwhen in raised position. "I
Like numerals of re ference'designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings. r
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 indicatesa combined invalid bed and chair in its entirety and it includes thespaced parallelside, rails 6 which are connected at one end bytheend rail 7. The opposite ends of the 'siderails 6 are provided with bearings 8 illustrating the bed raised to an inclined powhich aresecured thereto at the upper edges thereof. A U-shaped br'ace9 has the terminals of its arms secured as at' l0 to the supporting legs 11 which legs aresecured to the side rails6 at the open end thereof. The
rear or other ends of the siderails are sup port'ed'by legs .12 whichare secured-to the end rail thereof. "A roller'13 has. mounted therein a shaft 14, theen'ds of which shaft project beyond the end of the roller and are journaled in the bearings 8, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. .The side rails 15 are secured to the opposite ends of the roller and are movable between the side rails 6"of 1 the frame- A brace 16 :is secured to the lower edges of the side rails 15 at the free ends thereof .tore'inforce and hold the rails connectedtogethen A flexible strip- '17 is secured .totheupper edges of the side rails 15" and to the roller 13 as a't118"and"this construction constitutes the footp'orti'on of the bed when in afho'rizontal position.
An L-shapedbracket 19 is secured by one end, as at20, to the under side of each side rail -6 and depends downwardly therefrom and the brackets have theirfree ends di rected inwardly in the direction of each other as at 21, thereby constituting sup ports.
,1 The'shaft 14 carriedlby the roller113 has securedf'to one end fi jWhBGl 22 located on the r exterior of one rail the? purposefof which 1; will i be hereinafter more fully I scribed, v a j;
A vertical support'23 is "secured as n24.
to the innerl'sidedf the end rail? andrises v vertically therefrom to constitute the head board of the bed. r
., The bed includes the side rails '25 having one end'c'onnected by an end rail 26, and ilo secured to the upper edges of the side and end rails of the bed is a flexible member 27 which constitutes a mattress. The forward edges of the side rails have connected thereto on the lower edges thereof a reinforcing brace 28 and. the portions of the side rails are severed from connection with the side rails 6, thus constituting a seat 29 formed by a portion of the side rails and flexible member 27. The forward edges of the side rails 2'7 are provided with supporting members 30 which are adapted to engage the under edges of portions 29 of the seat when in a horizontal position to support the same in its horizon tal position and thus provide the bed.
A crank shaft 31 has its ends journaled in the side rails of the bed and extended through the side rails 6 of the frame. as illustrated. A gear wheel 32 is secured to one end of the crank shaft 31 on the exterior of one side rail 6 and this wheel 32 is provided with ratchet teeth 33 which are adapted to be engaged by a dog 3% pivotally secured to the side rail 6 at A crank handle 36 is secured to the shaft 31 on the exterior of one side rail and the wheel 32 and when turned in a clockwise direction it will move the bed to an inclined position, moving the seat into engagement with the portions 21 of the brackets 19 and thus constituting a seat and permitting the patient to be readily moved into an inclined or sitting position.
A lever 37 or rod is eccentrically and pivotally secured to the wheel 22 as at 38 by one end and has its opposite end eccentrically and pivotally secured to the wheel 32 as at 39. Thus it can be seen that by movement of the wheel 32 through the medium of the crank 36 the foot portion of the bed 15 will be moved into an inclined position when the bed is elevated, and moved to a horizontal position. when the bed is lowered.
A supporting rod 10 has its end provided with a semicircular bearing 41 which is journaled on the crank portion of the shaft 31 as at a2, and the opposite end is bent angularly and is secured to the end rail 26 of the bed as at 43 to reinforce and position the bed and support the bed in, either of its positions.
A pair of braces 4% are secured to the under side of each side rail 6 intermediate the ends thereof and are adapted to extend beyond the inner or side wall thereof to permit the bed to be readily supported in a horizontal position and lowered. A pawl 16 is pivotally secured as at 4:7 to the side rail 6 and is adapted to engage the ratchet teeth 33 to normally hold the bed in its raised inclined position as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
In operation, the handle is grasped and rotated in a clockwise direction, thus rotating the wheel 22, moving the bed to an inclined position, positioning the seat upon the brackets 21 and at the same time lowering the foot portion 15. The patient is then in an upright or sitting position. When it is desired to permit the patient to lie down, it is only necessary to release the dogs 16 and 34-, grasp the lever and let the patient down easily until the bed is in a horizontal position and the foot portion is raised flush therewith. Such operation is done simultaneously through the medium of the wheels 22, and 32 and the rod 37.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
