LOUIS HUFFMAN, OF TORONTO, CANADA.
DUPLICATlNG-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 712,681, dated November 1902- Applioation filed February 3, 1902. Serial No. 92,401. (No model.)
T0 at whom it many concern.-
Be it known that I, LOUIS HUFFMAN, manufacturer, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Duplicating-Books, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in duplicating-books; and the object of the invention is to devise a simple device adjustably attached to the book whereby the original and duplicate of one of the leaves of the book may be written on readily without leaving any mark upon the remaining leaves of the book and which will allow at the same time the leaves to be readily manipulated whether when being thrown into position ready for use or when thrown back out of the way or removed after use.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
I have illustrated the invention in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a book, showing my improved tablet in position and two positions of the leaves. Fig. 2 is a perspective detail of the cover, showing the manner of attaching the tablet thereto. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the original and duplicate leaves placed on top of the tablet, ready for use. Fig. 4 is a side elevation.
In the drawings like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
A is the cover of the book, and Bis the body of the book, consisting of a series of originals Z) and duplicates b, folded opposite to the stub of the book and perforated at such fold. The duplicate b is connected to the stub by a line of perforations. This is a common form of leaf, and I merely make mention of the same in order that my invention may be more completely'understood.
O is a clasp, secured to the cover A near the hinge a and designed to receive the stub or bound side of the book, which is inserted into it laterally.
position shown in Fig. 3.
c is a tubular socket extendiuglengthwise of the clasp O.
D is a tablet provided with a tubular end d, which is swung upon the cross-bar e on the end of the bail E, the bail being formed of two side bars 0, bent ends 6 which fit into the socket c at each side, and the crossbar 6, hereinbefore mentioned, upon which the tubular end of the tablet D is swung. The tablet D is made preferably of aluminium, but may be made of any stiff material which will form a smooth surface or base upon which the leaves are placed to be written upon.
It will be noticed on reference to Fig. 1 that the tablet D does not extend up to the top of the original, and the reason of this is so that the original may be readily pulled out in the manner as shown in heavy dotted lines in Fig. 1 into the position shown by light dotted lines in Fig. 1 and finally laid flat into the As the tablet is swung at the stub of the book and as the leaves are pulled out one after the other as they are written upon it will be readily seen that when the original is placed in position over its duplicate upon the tablet such original may be readily written upon as the tablet forms a first-class base or back and that such writing necessarily cannot be communi cated through such back onto the remaining portion of the book.
In the book I have shown the original and duplicate are of the class in which the transferring material is placed on the back of each original, so that when the original is written upon the copy is transferred upon the duplicate. It will also be seen from this description that the tablet in no way interferes with the manipulation of the book, but rather facilitates it.
What I claim as my invention is In a duplicatiug-book,the combination with the originals having the transferring material on the back and the duplicates designed to lie underneath such originals, which are folded from the bottom of the leaf over such duplicates, and the cover, and the clasp in which the stub of the book is held and the tubular socket extending lengthwise of the clasp, of a bail having the side or sides thereof provided with a bent end or ends on the stub end fitting into the tubular socket and a cross-bar at the opposite end of the bail, and a tablet provided with a tubular end swung on the cross-bar of the bail, said tablet being adapted be normally lie under one original and duplicate and over the balance of the to leaves of the book as specified.
LOUIS HUFFMAN.
