UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE C. WORTHINGTON, OF ELYRIA, OHIO.
COMBINED KNIFE AND FORK SUPPORT AND KNlFE-SHARPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 712,228, dated October 28, 1902. Application filed December 23, 1901. Serial No. 86,903. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE G. WORTHING- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elyria, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in a Combined Knife and Fork Support and Knife-Sharpener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of the invention is to provide a new article of manufacture sufficiently neat in appearance to be unobjectionable on a wellset dining-table, adapted to support the soiled blade of the carving-knife and the tang of the fork, and to afford means for sharpening said knife.
The invention consists of a plate having at its ends downwardly-projecting legs Wherewith it is supported, combined with a knifesharpener lying above the said plate and secured thereto about midway between the ends thereof.
It also consists in the more specific characteristics of the device, as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described, and pointed out definitely in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure view of my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan View, and Fig. 3 a side elevation thereof.
I will now describe the embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings, which is the best. form thereof now known to me.
- Referring to the parts by letters, A represents a plate, preferably made of sheet metal. Projecting upward from its side edges about midway between its ends are the integral cars a a. Each end of the plate is slitted longitudinally to form three tongues a a a, of which the two outside tongues are bent downward to form legs upon which the article stands, and the intermediate tongue at each end is turned upward to form a guard which will prevent a knife and fork resting upon the plate, as shown in the dotted lines of Fig.
1, from slipping off of the ends thereof.
1 is a perspective A knife-sharpener B is secured to the plate A about midway between its ends, said sharpenerconsistin g of two screw-threaded rodsb Z), fitted between the ears a a, secured thereto with their screw-threads intermeshing substantially as shown. The edge of the knife to be sharpened is put into the crease between theseintermeshing screws and drawn along lengthwise, the'result being that the sharp edges of the screw-threads will shave or scrape the metal from the knife-blade, and thereby put a good carving edge thereupon.
Having described my invention, 1 claim- 1. In a combined knife and fork support and knife-sharpener, the combination of a plate longitudinallyslitted'at each end to form three tongues of which the outside tongues are turned down to form legs and the intermediate tongues are turned up to form guards, ears extending upward on the sides thereof, and intermeshing circumferenti-ally-grooved rods mounted between said ears, substantially as specified.
2. Asa new article of manufacture, a combined knife and fork support and knife-sharpener consisting of a plate having downwardlyextending legs at its ends, ears extending upward on the side thereof, and two intermeshing circumferentially-grooved rods lying between and secured to said ears, substantially as specified.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a combined knife and fork support and knife-sharpener consisting of a plate having downwardlyextending legs at its ends, ears extending up- GEORGE C. WORTHINGTON.
