CHARLES E. SHELDON, OF SALAMANCA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-FOURTH T0 EDWARD E. KARLSKIND, OF
SALAMAN'GA, NEW YORK.
WALL-PAPER TRIMMER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 3, 1917.
Application filed. September 6, 1916. Serial No. 118,732.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. SHELDON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salamanca, in the county of Cattaraugus and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wall-Paper Trimmers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in Wall paper trimmers, and its object is to provide a trimmer especially designed and adapted for cutting a pasted paper and which is adapted to operate to cut the paper in an even, rapid and cleanly manner.
A further object of the invention is to provide a trimmer which is adapted for either right or left hand use and for guiding contact with a rule or other support in such a manner as to obviate any liability of casual displacement thereof.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a trimmer which will run evenly and smoothly in contact with the rule or other supporting surface.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accom panying drawing in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a wall paper trimmer embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the trimmer.
Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section thereof.
Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the device.
In carrying my invention into practice, I provide a trimmer comprising a supporting member or carriage 1 and a cutter carrying member or bracket 2. The carriage 1 is in the form of a body plate 3 having a forwardly extending top flange or wall 1 and end walls 5, thus forming a hollow body which is open at the base and front.
The end walls 5 have inwardly extending guide plates or projections 6 which are spaced from the body plate 3, and between which and said body plate are mounted upper supporting and guide rollers 7 j ournaled upon pins or screws 8 fitted in said body plate and end walls, which rollers are adapted to run in contact with a surface of a rule or other support during the trimming operation.
the
tact with the lower ears 9 and guide ribs 12 formed upon the guide plates 6, said guide ribs 12 having downward extensions in the form of guide lugs 13 projecting below the lower surfaces of the carriage bracket.
The guide lugs 13 are adapted to engage one side of the rule or other support at right angles to the surface of the rule or support engaged by the roll 7 and operate in conjunction with a guide bar 14., which is adapted for engagement with an opposite surface of the rule or support, to hold the device during the trimming operation from lateral displacement. The bar 14 is disposed below the lower edge of the body plate 3 and supported by a central plate 15 thereon which is suitably secured to the plate 3, said guide bar being provided at its ends with sets of rollers 16 and 17 arranged at right angles to each other to adapt said bar to run easily and freely in contact with the rule, or support other surfaces which it engages.
The bracket plate is provided with a central upwardly extending portion 18 carrying at its upper end a suitable form of handle 19, and, as shown, the bracket is normally sustained in an elevated position by coiled springs 20 disposed between the sliding sleeves 11 and the lower ears 9, whereby the bracket is normally held elevated out of cutting position and is adapted to be depressed against the yielding resistance of the springs i-nto cuttingposition, Disposed upon the inner side of the bracket and in the spaces formed between the same and the guide plates 6 are bevel-edged cutting disks 21 journaled on supporting springs or bolts 22, which disks are disposed on opposite sides of the transverse center of the cutter bracket and are normally held by the springs with their lower edges in the plane of the lower surface of the guide bar 14.
In the use of the device it is held in one of the hands of the operator who grasps the handle 19 and is brought into a rule or other guiding surface for traveling movement thereon, the guiding surface being disposed betWeen the disks and the guide rollers upon the adjacent side of the guide bar and running in contact With said rollers and the upper roll 7. Upon then depressing the cutter carrying bracket the cutters Will be forced downward for traveling engagement With the paper to be cut, so that by running the device along the guide surface in c0ntact With the paper the latter Will be cut or trimmed in an obvious manner. As Will be evident, the device may be used in either a horizontal or a vertical position and Will be guided against displacement in an effective manner, and in its use the paper Will be rapidly and cleanly cut.
I claim 1. A Wall paper trimmer or cutter comprising a supporting member having fixed depending guide members thereon, a longitudinally extending guide bar depending from said supporting member in parallel relation to the lower edge thereof, cooperating guide elements upon said supporting member and guide bar, a cutter carrying member slidably mounted upon the supportbar, a cutter carrying member slidably mounted upon the supporting member, a handle carried by said cutting member, springs yieldingly holding the cutting member elevated, and rotary cutting disks mounted upon the cutting member on opposite sides-of the transverse center thereof and arranged on a line between the guide members upon said supporting member.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
CHARLES F. SHELDON.
