UNITED STATES I PATENT OFFICE.
LIZZIE JANE NIEDNER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
SKIRTED UNION GARMENT.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 711,877, dated October 21, 1902.
Application filed May 29,1901. Renewed May 6, 1902. Serial No. 106,211. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LIZZIE JANE NIEDNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Skirted Union Garments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to skirted union garments, and particularly toa garment embodying a dress and a nether garment which may be readily put on and taken ofi with convenience.
The primary object of the invention is to construct a dress and a nether garment which is inexpensive, durable, and easily made; and a further object is to provide reinforcing means at the seams or points of connection where the greatest strains will be applied, so as to prevent the tearing or ripping of the parts.
\Vith this object in View the invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts whereby pockets are provided at the waist of the garment, which will be described hereinafter more fully, and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- I Figure 1 is a front elevation of the garment, showing the pocket-openings constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same, showing the garment spread out and the pocket-openings in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the fastening means for the flap of the nether garment to the dress; and Fig. 4 is a sectional View through one of the pockets, taken on line 4 at of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawings by numerals of reference, 1 designates the dress, provided on either side of the front with darts 2 and 3, while similar darts (designated by the reference-numerals4 and 5) are located under the armholes, to which are secured sleeves that the ends of the pocket-openings terminate adjacent the respective darts which reinforce the pockets, and suitable lines of stitching are provided for this purpose.
The nether garment (designated by the reference-numeral 10) is secured to the front of stitching (designated by the reference-numer- 1 als 18 and 14) in the form of semicircles is arranged adjacent the pocket-openings above referred to, which serves the double-purpose of fastening the inner garment to the outer one and at the same time forms the pockets.
In order to further reinforce the connection of the nether garment with the dress, a short line of stitching on outer sides of the pockets is provided, which I designate by the reference- numerals 15 and 16.
Extending from the top of the pockets or adjacent thereto to the rear of the dress on each side are seams 17 and 18, which connect the skirt with the waist, the skirt being gathered to the Waist, whereby the Waist portion of the dress will assume a neat fit, while the full efiect will be given to the skirt, which is desirable in childrens dresses. 19 is the front seam between the pockets.
From the foregoing it will readily be seen that I have provided an eifective, durable, and inexpensive device of the character described which can be readily made and by the use of which considerable labor and inconvenience will be avoided. In actual practice this garment will be made for summer wear of some light textile fabric suitable for the climate in which it is to be used. I reserve the right, however, to utilize any suitable material which may suggest itself, and I do not limit myself to the exact style of garment herein shown, but hold that the cardinal principles of this invention may be employed and adapted to suit varying styles of garments.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.
A skirted union garment comprising a dress and a nether garment, a. front waist-seam whereby the nether garment is secured to the inner side of the front of the dress, side waistseams to which the sides of the nether garment are secured to the dress, leaving pocketopenings between the front and the inner ends of the side seams, and stitching whereby the. dress and the nether garmentare secured'to-- gether to provide pockets beneath the pocketopenings. [o
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
