SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,676, dated November 19, 1889.

Be it known that I, SAMUEL RHODES MA- GEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bordentown, in the county of Burlington and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in earing- Apparel, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, wherein like letters of reference point out similar parts on each figure.

Figure 1 represents my invention attached to the lower end of a shirt front and back. Fig. 2 represents the lower portion ,of the sleeve of a shirt embodying my invention. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views of the invention,

portions being broken away.

The invention relates to garments composed of textile fabrics provided with one or more openingsas, for instance, at the lower ends of the seams of shirts that connect front and back sections, or at the opening at the lower end of the sleeve, where said sleeve has a terminal cuff or wristband.

My invention contemplates supplying the textile fabric of garments with a stitched rigid re-enforce stay at and above the termination of the placket, overlying both surfaces of the fabric in a compact pile, and in form* ing of unbroken thread, continuous with the pile, a yielding gusset bridging the upper end of the placket, said gusset being composed of thread-strands connected to and loosely meshed intermediate of the opposite edges of said placket to form open net-work, while the re-enforce stay above the mesh gusset composes a compact pile of overlying and interlaced threads upon both surfaces of the fabric, said opposite surface pile and mesh gusset being worked in place preferably with an ordinary sewing-machine by the operator while the various sections of the garment are being connected, thus dispensing with the employment of any separate pieces of fabric ordinarily used to form stay-pieces and placket gussets. Said re-enforce stay is composed of a series of intertwined threads overlying the seam and overcast thereinto on each surface of the fabric at the terminal end of the conjoined edges of the sections, said re-enforce extending laterally on each side of the seam over and upon both surfaces of the fabric. Next the strands of thread are intermeshed across the open space below the seam, bridging said opening with looselyinterwoven threads to compose an openmeshed gusset at the placket.

A is the front and B the back section of the body of the shirt.

F is the placket; a, the seam that connects the two sections. The seam is covered on both surfaces with a series of through-andthrough overlaid threads, which extend laterally on either side of said seam, over and upon the adjacent fabric, on both surfaces thereof, commencing at the apex 1, and from thence gradually increasing in width downwardly, as plainly seen in the drawings.

After the formation through and upon the seam and fabric of a stretched triangular reenforce stay, as described, the unbroken thread is then interlaced across the opening below said seam that composes the placket F, the thread being alternately passed through the opposite hems 2 3 of the sections A B, which hems extend from the seam a downwardly on either edge of the'said sections. Across the .said placket, at its upper end, there is thus formed an open-meshed gusset Gr, composed of threads continuing from and connected to the re-enforce stay, loosely interlaced and bridging the open space below the seam a, whereby, while the re-enforce stay is firm and rigid, the lower portion of the threadstrands, interwoven as described, will provide yielding gusset G of sufficient strength to resist strain from every direction.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

A garment composed of inelastic textile fabric, having at the terminal end of connected sections a re'enforce stay composed of interwoven strands overlying the seam uniting said sections, extending downwardly across said seam and laterally upon the adjacent fabric on both surfaces, in combination with a gusset composed of open interlaced strands continuous from and connected to said stay IG-BHfOIGG, and bridging the upper end of the placket F, as and for the purpose intended, substantially as described.
