To ALL WHOM 1T MAY CONCERN:`
Be it known that I, GEORGE W.`SHEARER, -of Crown Point CentrefEssex county, New Yolk, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Skatesf and I do hereby declare thatl thev following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled inthe art tomak'e and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming' part of this'specitication. f
The present invention relates to anovel manner of connecting the runner orblade to the foot-rest or block of the skate, through a'narrangement of springs and levers, whereby an easy and 'elastic movementis'imparted to the skate, vby the act of Askating thereon; and also to so creasing or grooving the under or running surface ot' the blade to the skate'as to -combine all the advantages o f both a. plain and grooved runner. Inl the accompanying'plate of drawings', my improvements in skates are illustrated-- i l Figure 1 being a plan view of the skate from'its under side.
Figure 2, a central longitudinal vertical section; and
Figure 3, a transverse vertical sectiomtaken in lthe plane of the line 1r ze, fig. 1.

A, inthe drawings, vrepresents the foot-rest or block to the skate.; B,..tbe runner or blade, which, through levers C and springs D, is secured to the under side of the foot-rest A, as will be nowdescribed. The levers C aretwo in number, and are hung upon a common cross-pin,-a, at their centres, so as to .cross or intersect one Aanother between the rest and-runner. In groove D, upon the under side of the foot-rest, the ends of the two levers C are hung to pins I1 of blocks E. 'The lower ends of the levers C, by pins c, are hung in slots nl of the ear-pieces on the upper side of th'e runner or blade B. The springs D are bent into shape, and byv one of their ends arevhung to the pins at theends of the levers joined toy the runner or blade B, and by-thcirothers to the 'pins of the slidingblocks`, by which the levers are arranged in the groove upon the underside of the foot-rest. By the arrangement ot the levers and springs above described, it is plain to be seenA that the ease and elasticity of the skate to 'the foot is greatly increased, and that the skater can consequently skate with greater speed. L, theI running or bearing-edge of the blade B to the skate, which edge is4 provided with two parallel grooves or creases f along its length, with the space or portion g of the edge between such .grooves projecting slightly beyond the extreme edges tothe skate-blade, whereby all the advantages of a plain and groovedrunner are secured, as is obvi'ous. 'I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the levers and springs between the blade and foot rest`ot` a. skate, whlen arranged and applied thereto sdbstantially `as and for the purpose described..-
The above specieation ot' my invention signed by'me this 22d day of April, 1867..v
' GEORGE W. SHEARER.
