Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY AXTELL, OF HUNTINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVED WHIP-ROLLING MACHINE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 70,501, dated November 5, 1867.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRYv AXTELL, of Huntington,Berkshire county,Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whip-Rollin g Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the aocompanyingdrawings, and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of my machine, and Fig. 2 a side view of the same.
This invention consists of a device for rolling whips, after they are otherwise completed, for the purpose of rounding them perfectly and pressing the threads together, so as to make the whole compact and close.
In construction I form my device as I will now describe, referring directly to the drawings.
A A, Sto., is a frame ofthe proper size, and h avin g across it a cross-piece, B, having rollers C and D and arms E and E',to which are pivoted levers F and F', one end of which each presses against a bar, G. This bar stretches across the front of the machine, and has tenons a a, which work in grooves b and b in the frame, so that the bar has a lateral play backward and forward, bein g operated by thelevers F and F' to throw it forward, and by the cord H to draw it back. This cord passes back through the cross-piece-B, and over the roller D behind it, hangin g down from thence, and havin g l a weight attached to it, or being attached to a treadle, as may be most convenient. Cords c and c are also attached to the ends of the levers F and F', and passover the roller O, and are both attached to a treadle beneath the machine.
In front of the bar G is a sliding bar, J, which works iu between guides f and f above and below it, these guides being attached -to the front cross-piece, K, of the frame. The
bar J has grooves in it at its top and bottom edges, into which ttongues upon the guides. This bar J is also operated by a crank, L, attached to one end, from which power is received, giving it a reciprocating motion across the machine in the line of its grooves.
Above the frame A are arranged pulleys g and g', over which passes a cord, K, one end of which is attached to the whip being rolled, and the other having a weight, m.
The operation of this device is as follows: The Whip, being attached to the cord K at its small end, hangs vertically between the bars G and J, being held at the lower end. The bar G is then pressed up against it by the le' vers F and F' operated by the treadle, and being letl go at the lower end the weight m draws it up through the machine, the bar J rolling it against the bar G as it passes through. By this means I obtain an excellent device for rolling whips, being easily constructed and operated. and doing the work thoroughly and`A effectively without injury to the whip.
. Havingdescribed myinvention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent," 1s- 1. A device for rolling whips, consisting of a frame, A, having the reciprocating bar J and adjustable bar G, between which the whip is rolled, the bar J being operated by power, and the bar G by the levers F and F', with their treadle attachment, the whole being arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The device for drawing the whip through the rolling-machine, consisting of the cord K, havin g the weight m' passing over the pulleys g and g', in combination with rest of my machine, substantially as described.
HENRY AXTELL.
