TO ALL WHOMIT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known thatI, FRANCIS MILLS, of Mount Vernon, in the county of Iosey, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful` Improvement in Machine for Bending Tires; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,'and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being hadvto the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved tire-bending machines.
Figure 2 is a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a new and improved machine for bending iron for wheel-tires, and consists in an arrangement of feed and shaping-rollers operated by a hand-erank, in such manner that a bar of iron shall be bent in any desired curve by passing through the rollers, as hereinafter particularly described.
YA is a strong supporting bench, on the ends 0f which are fixed frames B B', provided with several bearings a a, at different elevations, for the adjustment of rollers C C that are hung thereon. A sliding head, rI), is attached to the bench, which carries a roller, E, suspended over the roller C, and arranged in such manner that by moving the sliding head D, the rollers GE shall be adjusted nearer together or further apart, as desired, for receiving between them bars of iron of different thickness for bending. Between the fixed frames B B" are placed the bearings F of a roller, G, having cranks c c on the ends for bending the tires. The bearings F on each side ofthe bench A slide up and down between the frames B B', and have a yoke or stirrup, d, connected with them, on which is suspended a long lever, H, that is pivoted to a hanger, h, at its rear end, for raising and lowering the roller Gr. When the crank-roller Gr is raised its lower surface ranges in a line above the level of the upper surface of the rollers C C, in order to allow a straight bar of iron to pass under it and over the said rollers, and then by depressing the' lever H the roller G is borne down upon the iron bar as much as may be necessary to give it any desired curve to'form a tire by running it back and'forth betweenthe said rollers, as shown in fig. 1. The lever1 H is held in place during the operation of bending by a dog, e, engaging in` a rack, g, on the upper side of the lever. Y
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The arrangement of the adjustable rollers C C hung in either one of the fixed bearings B B', the roller E hung in the horizontally sliding headD, the crank-roller G hung in the vertically sliding bearings F, in combination with the lever H suspended on the stirrup d, and provided with the rack g, to-be held in place by the dog e, the whole mounted on the bench A, and operating as herein described.
' FRANCIS MILLS.
