Be it known that I, CHARLES P. POINIEP., of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a. new and useful Improvement in Frames for Pictures, Advertising-Cards, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in whichi Figui-e1 represents an elevation of frame.

Figure 2 represents a vertical transverse section when the frame is closed.

Figure 3 represents a vertical transverse section whenthe frame is opened.

The same letters refer to the same parts in theseparate gures.

An objection to frames for pictures, advertising-cards, photographs, &c., as at present made, consists in the difficulty in securing together the glass and the picture or card. i In order to get access to either the glass 'or card it isnecessary to remove the frame from its place and to pull out the nails which hold the back-board. In advertising-cards, time-tables, Sto., which have to'be frequently renewed, this is a tedious process, and, requires a careful handling. The glassiits loosely in the frame, so that dampness is liable to enter and injure the picture. The lightness and portability of the object are often made use of by unscrupulous persons who appropriate them to their own use.

'The object and purpose of my invention are to secure the frame so that it cannot easily bc removed, to protect the picture or card from all moisture, to x the glass firmly and securely in place, and to enable'the picture or cards to be changed without taking the frame from its place.

My invention consists in the employment of two frames, one of which, being in form similar to an ordinary frame, is to be firmly fastened to the wall, the same being reversed and provided with a projecting lip inside; the other frame, with the glass and back-board, is inserted in the frontof the first one, and securedvby means of pins, a lip, and a spring or springs, or in any other suitable manner. It also consists in fastening the glass so as to be air-tight, and connecting the back-board in such a manner with the second frame that it will swing on one end and open the space between it and the glass, and thus allow the picture or card to be removed and a new one to be inserted in its place. It will be seen that theI inner inserted frame does not touch the wall, but ls about the thickness of the lip against which it rests 'from the wall, so that moisture or dampness which may happen to run down the wall will not affect the picture, an air-space being between it and the back-board To enable vothers skilled to make and use my invention, Iy will proceed to describe the same with vreference Vto the drawings. i

The glass G is sealed or connected air-tight to lip H of' frame E, and the back-board J may be secured either to the by pins L and M.

, The operation is as follows: Suppose the frames to be closed, vand it is desired to remove a picture or cards. Pull out pin L, then swing frame E around pin M, and either lift it out altogether or leave it in position as shown inJg. 3'; the picture or card may then 'be removed and another one inserted, and the frame E replaced and secured by pin L. Y

I do not confine myself to the manner of securing the frames, as shown in the drawing, as any equivalent device will answer, such as a hinge at the bottom and a spring at the top, or a 'bevellcd bottom and a spring at the top; or rubber strips and springs may be used. The frame A may form a part of the wall or panel of a door, if desirable. But what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of the fixed and detachable frames A and E, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as specified.
