JAMES H.- BURNETT, JR, OF NEWARK. NEW JERSEY.
Letters Patent No. 75,858, dated. March 10, 1868.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY concerns:
Be it known that I,- JAMES LLBURNETCL', Jr., of Newark, in the county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Travelling-Trunks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others-skilled in the art to make-and use the'sam e,'reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present invention relates to that class of travelling-trunks divided into two sections-insuch manner that the one can he swung up and, into a position ofrest and support upon the top of the other section, presenting the whole interior of the trunk to view for the insertion therein and removal of articles therefrom, as may be desired; and the invention consists, first, in giving such an obtuse-angle shape to the joint of the'two sec. tions of the trunk as .to oii'er no'obstrnction .to the closing of the same, and permit them to be hinged together in the most convenient and practicableas well as advantageous manner; second, in a novel construction and arrangement of partitions within the'trunk, dividing it into a series of compartments for the reception of wearing apparel, toiletand other articles, 850., whereby simplicity and convenience are secured. In the accompanying plate of drawings my improvements in travelling-trunks are illustrated- Figure l being a view of one end of a' trunk made according thereto, when closed.
v Figure 2, a face view and elevation of the trunk' opened, showing the construction and arrangement of its interior partitions. Figure 3, a transverse vertical section, taken in the planeof the line a: m, fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A, in the drawings, represents the wooden outside case or box ofthe trunk, made,'in the present instance, of a rectangular shape, and covered with leather, or otherwise protected and strengthened by iron bands B, &c., secured by nails 0 or otherwise. This box A is divided into two sections,D and E, in a line, from the upper side F of the box-to itsfront'side, G, that in direction forms an obtuse angle at H, of sufiicint openness, and with the lower arm I, to the same inclining from the said -angle-point H snfliciently tonllow the one part D to be shut down or closed upon the other, to the upper side of which it is suitably hung by hinges at J, without the least trouble, and-with no possibility of obstruction. These two sections Dand E are divided by partitions K into compartments, in thefirst case L, M, andO, and in the second case into compartments 1?, Q, and R. The several compartments L, M, N, and O ofthe section D are provided with lids, S,-that are hinged thereto so nstobeopened and closed at pleasure, they being held closed by elnstic bands or straps T, suitably attached to the same. The apartment P to the section E is provided with a lid, U, having fasteningbands or strapsV similarly to the lids S, and the apartment 0 with a drawer or box, W, for holdinga hat, bonnet, or other articles of similar wearing-apparel. The apartment R is provided with a lid, X X, made in two sections hinged together, with theonc hinged to the trunk-boxalong its front side or edge, Y, and the other adapted, by fastening-handsetstraps Z, to be fastened in a closed position, as shown in the drawings, fig. 3, the two lid sections then forming an angle with each other. This lid, as before stated, opens into the apartment R, which is,
as is seen by tho drawings, at the bottom of the trunk, and by being made in sections, such apartment can .be
thus entirely. thrown open for the insertion or removal of wearing-apparel, &c. Withinthe compartment His :1. partition-board, A, so confined at each'.'end bythc strips 13" fastened to the ends of the trunk-box as to be susceptible of easy removal and replacement if so desired.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- In combination with a trunk constructed as described, the lid X, made in two sections, hinged together, one section being also hinged-to the front edge of the trunk at Y, an d'the other adapted to fit against the verti; cal part of the trunk, both forming an obtuse angle, the removable'partition A in the body of the trunk, arid thehat-receptacle, as herein shown and described. I
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 22d day of August, 186l.
