HARVEY G. RALYA, OF LAPEL, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO EDWARD S. HUTTON, OF LAPEL, INDIANA.
LAWN-COASTER.
SPIEGIFICATIQN forlning part of Letters latent No. 699,567, dated May 6, 1902. Application filed October 23,1901. Serial No. 79,726. (No model.) 7
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARVEY G. RALYA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lapel, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lawn Coasters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in what are known as lawn-coasters. Its design is for physical recreation and is characteristic of simplicity, and it is readily constructed and cheaply manufactured. It is equally applicable for use in connection with household articles for recumbent and sitting purposes.
It consists of the combination and arrangement of parts, including their construction, substantially as hereinafter morefully disclosed, and particularly pointed out by the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan View. Fig. 3 is a detailed section showing more particularly the truck or the mounting of the device movably in position.
It will be understood that I do not restrict myself to details, as they may be changed or varied without departing from the spirit of my invention and the same remain intact and yet be protected. A
In carrying out my invention I employ a horizontal frame or structure 1, preferably composed of longitudinal lateral bars 1 and end bars 1", suitably secured or connected together. I. suitably equip said frame with seats 2, consisting, preferably, of upper endconnected inclined side bars or arms 2 with their lower ends pivoted or connected to said longitudinal lateral bars at points upon each side of the center thereof, and of some textile material or fabric 2*, applied to said side bars in a well-known Way, as shown, forming the seat proper. Said lateral bars or arms have applied or connected thereto at about the center the upper ends of oppositely-inclined propping bars or braces 2, with their lower ends connected or pivoted to said lateral bars.
The connection between the arms or bars 2 and the propping bars or braces 2 is preferably effected so as to be adjustable, as at 2, whereby said arms may be disposed or set at an inclination or angle more nearly approximating the horizontal, as in adapting the seats for recumbent or reclining purposes. Said horizontal frame 1 has depending therefrom pairs of hangers or brackets 3, one of each pair being arranged and secured upon opposite sides of each of the longitudinal bars of said frame, near each end thereof. Said hangers or brackets comprise each an elongated slotted bar orbearing 3", with integral upstanding arms 3", by means of-wliich and suitable fastenings or bolts the connection is effected between said hangers and the frame 1. A'roll or truck 4 of suitableconstruction is hung between each pair of said hangers,
- with its integral axle playing in the slots of said hangers, thus while permitting said rolls to revolve also allowing them to have a limited traveling movement back and forth, as the device is accordingly actuated or reciprocated, as when operated.
5 is a base-frame whose longitudinal members form rails and have their upper surfaces in the present instance rounded or convexed, while the trucks or rolls 4 have each a peripheral groove therein or its periphery concaved to receive and travel upon said rails, and thus aid the retention of said trucks or rolls thereon as against lateral movement. In lieu of this construction said rails may have each a longitudinal channel or groove therein and the trucks or rolls have convexed or rounded peripheries entering the grooves or channels of said rails. Said trucks or rolls may also be equipped with rubber tires, if desired, reducing noise or creaking andrender the same lighter running than would oth erwise be the case. The means of connection between the longitudinal or side bars of each of the frames 1 and 5 may consist of sleeved rods or cross-pieces, with the rods passing through said bars, and the sleeves thereon having their ends abutting said side bars, thus spacing apart the last-named when thus connected or assembled.
Springs 6, with their ends connected to the frames 1 and 5, respectively, as shown, normally retain the frame 1 centrally of the frame or rails 5, so that as the operator, or operators, according as to whether one or both of the seats may be occupied, moves by the action of his feet the apparatus in either direction one spring will be compressed or the tension thereof be overcome by such movement or action, while the other spring will be distended audits tension be increased, aiding or accelerating the return movement of the parts, as will be apparent.
Thus a device or apparatus is provided which is highly recreative and which is simple, readily constructed, and manufactured at the minimum cost. It is also observed that in this apparatus or device the weight of the occupant is always about central of the rolls or trucks, thus preventing any tendency of the tilting of the device at the ends, as would otherwise be liable to occur. It is also observed that the features of this device are equally applicable to certain household articles, as a settee, couch or lounge, a cradle, &c., which it is not believed is necessary to enter into herein in detail.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character described, a movable member or part equipped with a seat, a stationary member or part extending some distance beyond said movable member, at each end, pairs of roll or truck carrrying hangers or brackets, with their longitudinallyslotted portions arranged next to said stationary member and their integral upstanding arms connected to said movable member, and means adapted to provide for centering said movable member, said movable member adapted to be moved and restricted within limits corresponding to the length of said stationary member, substantially as set forth.
2. In a device of the character described, a movable part or member, a stationary member or part extending some distance beyond said movable member, at each end, pairs of hangers or brackets, with theirlongitudinallyslotted portions arranged next to said stationary member and their integral upstanding arms connected to"said movable member, and springs connected to said movable and stationary members at their ends, said movable member or part adapted to be moved and restricted within limits corresponding to the length of said stationary member or part, substantially as set forth.
3. In a device of the character described, a movable member or part equipped with a pivoted seat and a brace or prop connected to said member and adjustably to said seat, a stationary member or part extending some distance beyond said movable member, at each end, pairs of roll or truck carrying hangers or brackets, with their longitudinallyslotted portions arranged next to said Stationary member and their integral upstanding arms connected to said movable member, and means adapted to provide for centering said movable member, said movable member adapted to be moved and restricted within limits corresponding to the length of said stationary member, substantiallyas set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
