JOSEPH C. GRELLNER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
TOY R AMUSEMENT DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 5, 1916.
Application filed March 17, 1916. Serial No. 84,821.
. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH C. GRELLNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Toys or Amusement Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof.
This invention relates generally to toys or amusement-devices and, more particularly, to a certain new' and useful improvement in that class of childrens toys or amusementdevices commonly called shoo-flies, the principal object of my present invention being to provide a comparatively inexpensive and readily manufactured shoo-fly adapted especially for use by, and to afford safe, pleasant, and exhilarating amusement of, children, the shoo-fiy when in use having not only a rolling or gliding back and forth, but also and at the same time an up and down, movement.
With the above and other objects in view, my present invention resides in certain novel features of form, construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as will hereinafter be described and afterward pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates my invention in preferred form, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a shoo-fly embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevational view thereof; and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the same.
Referring to the said drawing, in which like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views, A indicates the base of the shoo-fiy, base A being adapted to rest solidly upon a floor or other support and comprising a pair of rails 1--1 rigidly connected or fixed together in suitably spaced apart parallel relation by means of cross-rods or the like 2. At their upper faces, rails 1 are each similarly cut away, as at 3-3, to provide alining pairs of connected concaved or segmental bearing or traveling surfaces for preferably flanged rollers 4. Of these rollers 4, there are, in my shoo-fly here shown, four in numberone for each bearing or traveling surface 3. These rollers 4 are suitably journaled upon suitable spindles or axles 5 fixed to, and crosswise upon the under face of, a suitable platform 6.
B indicates the upper or seat-frame part of the Shoo-fly, which likewise comprises similarly spaced-apart parallel rails 77 rigidly united by cross-members or rods 8. At their under faces, rails 7 are also each similarly cut away or undercut, as at 99,
to correspondingly provide alining pairs of connected concaved or segmental bearingsurfaces for the frame B upon the rollers 4, frame, B being adapted, as shown, to rest upon the rollers 4 and, relatively to base A, move backward and forward with platform 6 and its rollers 4 when the shoo-fiy is in use. As seen particularly in Figs. 2 and 8, the flanged portions 4 of the rollers 4 engage upon the inner faces of the side rails of both base A and frame B.
Suitably mounted upon rails 7-7 are posts or the like 10, fixed upon which are suitable seat side-members 11-11. These seat side-members may have any desirable form or shape; preferably, as here shown,
the same have the form or shape in side elevation of horses. Fixed to, and located between or intermediate, said members 11, are suitable back and bottom seat-members 12 and 13, respectively. The seat so provided is adapted and designed to receive and support in the shoo-fly the child or children using the same, the feet of such child or children resting upon movable platform 6.
Pivoted to, and on each side of, platform 6, are upwardly disposed rods or levers 14-14, each of which adjacent its upper ends is provided with a suitable somewhat elongated slot 15 to receive and engage with a suitable small roller or the like 16 suitably journaled for rotation upon the inner face of each side seat member 11. (To prevent the clothes of the child or children using the shoo-fiy accidentally or otherwise engaging in said slots 15 or with said rollers 16, suitable plates not here shown may be fixed upon said levers or rods 14 to cover said slots 15 and rollers 16.) Extending crosswise between and connecting levers 14 at their upper ends is a suitable cross or hand-rail or rod 17 adapted and designed to be grasped or engaged by the hands of the child or children using the shoo-fiy and by means of which, as the child or children using the shoo-fly pushes and pulls back and forth thereupon, both platform 6 and frame B are caused to roll or move back and forth relatively to stationary base A, the rollers 16 working in said lever-slots 15 and both platform 6 and frame B also and at the same time, due to said segmental surfaces 3 and 9, moving up and down relativelv to base A.
Mounted adjacent the inner face of each rail 1 of base A upon and upstanding from a shaft or rod 18 extending between and suitably mounted upon said rails, are rigid brackets, arms, or the like 19 provided at their upper or free ends with inwardly presented rollers 20 adapted to roll upon and engage with short segmental tracks or the like 21 fixed upon the inner faces of rails 7 of frame B to prevent lateral displacement of the frame B relatively to the base A.
'I am aware that minor changes in the form, arrangement, construction, and combination of the several parts of my new shoofiy may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the nature and principle of my in vention.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a toy or amusement device, a base comprising a pair of parallel spaced apartrails provided upon their upper face with pairs of connected segmental bearing surfaces, a seat-frame similarly comprising a pair of spaced apart parallel rails provided upon their under face with pairs of connected segmental bearing surfaces, the bearing-surfaces of said frame being oppositely disposed to the bearing-surfaces of said base, a platform interposed between said base and frame, rollers journaled for rotation on said platform, said rollers being positioned, and adapted to roll with their said platform back and forth relatively to the base, upon the bearing-surfaces of the base and said frame loosely resting at its said bearing-surfaces upon said rollers and being adapted to travel back and forth with said platform relatively to the base, and means convenient to the seat of said frame for imparting movement to both said platform and frame relatively to said base, said means including a lever pivoted upon the platform and slotted adjacent its upper end, and a roller journaled upon the frame and working in the slot of said lever.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner 2. In a toy or amusement device, a base comprising a pair ofparallel spaced apart rails provided upon their upper faces with pairs of connected segmental bearingsurfaces, rollers adapted to travel back and forth relatively to the base upon said surfaces, an upper frame similarly comprisirig'a pair of parallel spaced apart rails provided upon their under faces with like pairs of connected segmental bearingsurfaces, said frame loosely resting at its said surfaces upon said rollers and being adapted to travel back and forth with said rollers relatively to the base, and means adapted to prevent lateral displacement of said frame relatively to said base, said means including rigid brackets mounted upon and upstanding from the rails of said base, segmental-tracks fixed upon the rails f I of said frame, and rollers on said brackets adapted to engage with said tracks and roll thereupon in the movement of said frame relatively to said base.
3. In a toy or amusement device, a base comprising a pair of parallel spaced apart rails provided upon their upper faces with pairs of connected. segmental bearingsurfaces, rollers adapted to travel back and forth upon the upper faces of said rails, an
upper frame similarly comprising a pair of parallel spaced apart rails provided upon their under faces with like pairs of connected segmental bearing-surfaces, said frame loosely resting at its said rails upon it said rollers and being adapted to travel back and forth with said rollers relatively to the base, a platform interposed between said frame and base and upon which said rollers arejournaled', and means for imparting movement toboth said platform and frame relatively to said base, said means including levers pivoted upon said platform and slotted adjacent their upper ends, roll ers in the slots of said levers, and a hand-rail connecting said levers.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
