UNITED Srrvrn'sfv PATENT OFFICE.
ARLEY M. JOHNSON, OF BELLE CENTER, OHIO.
ROBE-LOCK FOR VEHICLES.
SPECIEIGATION forming partof Letters `Patent N o. 698,287, dated April 22, 1902. v v Application filed December 28, 1901. l Serial No. 87,610. (No model i To all whom iv' may concern:
Be it known that I, ARLEY M. JOHNSON a citizen of the United States, residing at Belle Center, in the county of Logan and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Robe- Lock for Vehicles, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to a device for locking robes to some stationary portion of a vehicle.
The object of thev invention is to provide a simple and effective device for securing a robe to a vehicle for preventing its loss either' by dropping from the 'vehicle or by its being stolen therefrom.
Figure] of the accompanying drawings represents a perspective view of a portion of a' vehicle, showing a lap-'robe disposed therein and having this improved lock applied. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal vertical section of this robe-lock applied and in locked position..
Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the two members of the robe-lock detached.
The same reference-numerals indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Inthe form illustrated inthe drawings a plate 10 is shown adapted forpattachment to a lap-robe and a clamp 2O forengaging a por-v tion of a vehicle and provided'with means for fastening it to the plate 10. lThe plate 10 is preferably'inade in the form of a metalstrip rounded at its Vopposite ends and provided with longitudinallyextending lines of perforations, as 11', through which the plate is attached to the robe 50, preferably by means of a wire thread, which'would more securely attach the plate to the robe than if the ordinary sewing-thread were used... rIlhe `end 12 of the plate 10 projects beyondftlie edge of the robe and is provided with an aperture 13 therein for a purpose hereinafter described. The clamp 20 is preferably formed of a plate bent or folded at the middle thereof to form a large loop 21, adapted to encircle'a rod. The outer ends 22 and 23 of the clamp20 are provided near their extremities withregistering apertures 24 and 25. Theend 12 of the plate 10 is designed to be inserted between theends 22 and 23 of the clamp 20I and the'apertures 13 therein disposed so as to register with the apertures 24. and 25 of the clamp 20. A padlock 30 is preferably used to secure these members together by passingits hasp through the registering apertures 13, 24, and 25.'
In the use of the device the plate 10 is fastened to the robe 50, as described, by means of a wire thread and has its-end 12 extend-` ing beyondthe edge of the robe; Thel clasp or clamp 2O is then passed around any suitable rod of a vehicle-such as the dashboardrod or, as shown, the seat-rod-and the two ends 22 and 23 are so disposed as to clasp the end 12 of the plate l() between them, with the apertures 13, 24, and 25 registering.v The padlock 30 is then passed through the apertures andlocked, wherebythe robe is securely fastened to the vehicle.
I claim as my invention- 1. In combination with a lap-robe, a plate v attached thereto, andhaving a projecting end provided with an opening, a clamping member secured to an anchoring device ah'd'having arms to receive the projectingend ofthe plate'between them, said arms having open ings to register with that in the plate, and a locking device to engage said registering openings and secure said plate to said clamp, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a lap-robe of a plate having pe'rforations therenand an aperture at one end thereof, means for attaching said plate to said robe, and a'clamphav y ing a loop for engaging a rod, the end of said plate extending in the same direction in parallel planes and provided with means for attaching them to said perforated plate.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing'as my own I have hereto aiiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.l l
ARLEY IWI. JOHNSON.
