Beitknown thatI, Purim C. Ko EUNE, a citizen of VtheUnited States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Pads, of which the following is a speciiication.

My invention relates to improvements in portable pads, an object of the invention being to provide a pad of the character described, which can be conveniently carried in the grip or satchel of the owner, and which is capable of a wide range of usefulness to cushion hard and uncomfortable surfaces and to greatly add to th-e comfort of the user.

A further object is to provide a pad of the character described, which will be ieXible so as to conform to various surfaces and which is so constructed as to prevent the disfiguring or injury of any support to which it is connected.

A further object is to provide a pad which can be kept in an entirely sanitary condition, which will be neat and attractive in appearance, and strong and durable in use.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings:

Figure 1 is a view in elevation, illustrating my improved pad applied to the arm of a seat such as commonly found in railway coaches.

Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the pad with the springs folded against the pad, and

Fig. 3 is a view in transverse section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, the covering doily being omitted.

1 represents the body portion or cushioning member of 'my improved pad, which may be made of various flexible materials, but preferably consists of an inner filling of felt 2, inclosed by an outer covering 3 of leather or other suitable material, which is sewed along one edge as shown at l, and along both ends as shown at 5, to snugly fit around the felt 2 and efectually inclose the saine.

The covering 3 does not interfere with the cushioning effect and flexibility of the filling 2, but protects the latter from soiling, and

r can be kept clean and in a perfectly sanitary condition. A

The body l is held in place on any suitable support by means of two clamping members 6, 6. These clamping members comprise bow springs which are inclosed in tubes 7 preferably of rubber, so as to prevent injuring the article which they engage. The clamping members 6, arc connected to the body portion l by straps 8.

These straps S are secured at their ends by lines of stitching 9 and as the clamping members 6 are relatively flat in cross section, the straps 8 serve to hold the clamping members in either their clamping position or their folded position. The folded position is shown in F ig. 2, and by reference to Fig. 3, it will be seen that the clamping members in this position press into the body of the pad, and hence are frictionally held against accidental movement.

On the lower face of the body portion l, l preferably locate a card-receiving pocket 10, to receive an identification card l1, so that the pad can readily be returned to the owner if accidentally left behind.

To render the pad more sanitary, I preferably provide a doily or cover l2, secured around the central portion of the pad in any approved manner. This doily can be reversed and replaced at the will of the user.

In Fig. l, I illustrate the pad as connected to the arm 13 of a railway coach seat, and I have purposely shown this arm as a curved or uneven surface which clearly demonstrates how my flexible pad will conform to the shape of the arm and provide a cushioning support thereon.

The pad is flexible both longitudinally and transversely so that it will take any ordinaryT shape, and hence is useful for many purposes as a supportfor the arm, hand, head or other portions of the body.

The fiexibility of the pad also is an asset to allow the pad to be packed away into a small space, and insures the retention of the clamping members in their folded position as above pointed out.

Various slight changes may be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alteraand adapted when folded against the :pad to Goplel of this petent may be obtained Vfor press the pad inwardly under the straps and Vfrictionatlly hold the clampingvmembers in such position.
