Be it known that I, JAMES T. ROBB, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Flatbush, in the borough of Brooklyn, in the city of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Electric-Lamp Sockets, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to improvements in sockets for incandescent electric lamps, and particularly for so-called miniature lamps for decorative and other useful purposes. At the present time, owing to the small size of the sockets which are used for miniature lamps,the contacts thereof are exposed. Modern municipal regulations require in many instances the concealment of all live conductors, so that the efforts which have been made to properly protect sockets for miniature lamps have been in the nature of makeshifts and have therefore been objectionable.
My object is to provide a very simple and cheap socket, particularly applicable for miniature lamps, and which shall be so inclosed as to effectively conceal all the conductors.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a plan of the improved socket on an enlarged scale; Fig. 2, a vertical sectional view; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 a side elevation showing the full size of the socket.
In all of the above views corresponding parts are represented by the same numerals of' reference.
A metallic base 1 is provided with a thread ed nipple 2, by which the socket may be secured in place to the desired fixture. Carried upon the base 1 is an insulating annular body 3, made, preferably, of porcelain and secured in place by the countersunk screws 4 4. The insulating-body 3 is provided with two recesses 5 5, through which extend the screws 6 6 for holding the contacts in place. One of these contacts is provided with a plate 7, from which extends the contact-arm 8, bent upward and inward and formed with a fiat disklike head 9, with which the central terminal of the lamp engages. The other contact is formed of a plate 10, which is seated upon the horizontal leg of a contact-sprin g 11, the screw 6 passing through said spring and plate, as shown. The plates 7 and 10 are provided with binding-screws 12 12, with which the terminals may engage, the Wires being obviously brought up through the nipple 2 and being passed through the porcelain body 3. Surrounding the contacts 8 and 11 is a ring 13, made, preferably, of fiber, and seated upon said ring is a sleeve 14, made, preferably, of porcelain, containing the threaded metallic sleeve 15, into which the lamp screws. The threaded sleeve 15 is formed with outstruck portions 1G, which engage recesses in the porcelain sleeve 14, so as to thereby prevent the threaded sleeve 15 from turning relatively to the porcelain sleeve 14. The outturned flange of the threaded sleeve 15 is seated between the sleeve 14 and ring 13, so as to be clamped tightly in position. A metal shell 17 is provided with a flange 18 at its upper end, seated over a shoulder 19 on the sleeve 14, and has its lower end internally screw-threaded for engaging screw threads on the base l, as shown, whereby the shell will hold all the parts of the socket firmly and rigidly together.
In wiring the socket the shell 17 is unscrewed from the base 1 to allow the ring 13 and sleeve 14 to be removed, thereby disclosing the contacts 8 and 11. The terminals are now properly connected with the bindingscrews 12 12, after which the ring V13 and sleeve 14 are replaced and held securely in position by the shell 17, the contact-spring 11 making contact with the threaded metal sleeve 15.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. As a new article of manufacture, an electric-lamp socket, comprising an insulatingbody, a central contact carried by said body, a contact-spring carried by said body, an insulating-ring inclosing said contact and contact-spring, a threaded metal sleeve above said ring making contact with the contactspring, and an insulating-sleeve surrounding said threaded metal sleeve and holding the latter in engagement with said ring, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, an electric-lamp socket, comprising an insulating- IOO body, a central contact carried by said body, a contact-spring carried by said body, an insulating-ring inclosing said contact and contact-spring, a threaded metal sleeve above said ring making contact with the contactspring, an insulating-sleeve surrounding said threaded metal sleeve and holding the latter in engagement with said ring, and a metal shell engaging said insulating sleeve for clamping the threaded metal sleeve between said insulating sleeve and ring, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. As a new article of manufacture, an electric-lamp socket, comprising an insulatingbody, a central contact carried by said body, a contact-spring carried by said body, an insulating-ring inclosing said contact and contact-spring, a threaded metal sleeve above said ring making contact with the contactspring, an insulating-sleeve surrounding said threaded metal sleeve and holding the latter in engagement with said ring, and means for preventing relative rotation of said sleeves, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. As a new article of manufacture, an electric-lamp socket, comprising an insulatingbody, a central contact carried by said body, a contact-spring carried by said body, an insulating-ring inclosing said contact and contact-spring, a threaded metal sleeve above said ring making contact with the contactspring, and an insulating-sleeve surrounding said threaded metal sleeve and holding the latter in engagement with said ring, the threaded metal sleeve being provided with outstruck portions engaging recesses in said insulatingsleeve for preventing relative rotation of said sleeves, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
5. As a new article of manufacture, an improved electric-lamp socket, comprising a metal base, an:insulatingbody carried by said base, an insulating ring surmounting the body, an insulating sleeve carried by said ring, means for clamping said sleeve and ring upon said insulating-body, a threaded metal sleeve carried within said insulating-sleeve, and a central contact carried by said body, substantially as set forth.
6. Asanew article of manufacture, an improved electric -lamp socket, comprising a metal base,an insulating-body carried by said base, an insulating ring surmounting the body, an insulating-sleeve carried by said ring, a metal shell having a threaded connection with said base and engaging said sleeve for clamping said sleeve and ring upon said insulating-body, a threaded metal sleeve carried within said insulating-sleeve, and a central contact carried by said body, substantially as set forth.
7. As a new article of manufacture, an improved electric-lamp socket, comprising a metal base, an annular insulating-body carried by said base, two metal plates secured to said body, a contact extending from one of said plates, a contact-spring carried by the other of said plates, an insulating-ring surrounding said contact and contact-spring, an insulating-sleeve surmounting said ring, and a threaded metal sleeve carried within said insulating-sleeve and clamped in position between the same and said ring, substantially as set forth.
S. As a new article 0f manufacture, an improved electric -lamp socket, comprising a metal base, an annular insulating-body carried by said base, two metal plates secured to said body, a contact extending from one of said plates, a contact-spring carried by the other of said plates, an insulating-ring surrounding said contact and contact-spring, an insulating-sleeve sux-mounting said ring, a threaded metal sleeve carried Within said insulating-sleeve and clamped in position between the same and said ring, and means for clamping said insulating sleeve and ring upon the insulating-bod y, substantially as set forth.
9. As a new article of manufacture, an improved electric -lamp socket, comprising a metal base, an annular insulating-body carried by said base, two metal plates secured to said body, a contact extending from one of said plates, a contact-spring carried by the other of said plates, an insulating-ring surrounding said contact and contact-spring, an insulating-sleeve surmounting said ring, a threaded metal sleeve carried within said insulating-sleeve and clamped in position between the same and said ring, and a metal shell having a threaded connection with said base and engaging said sleeve for clamping said sleeve and ring upon' the insulatingbody, substantially as set forth.
