AMAND CARL MARIA PRUCKER, OF HANOVER, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO THE SIEMENS 85 I-IALSKE ELECTRIC COMPANY OF AMERICA, OF CHICAGO, ILLI- NOIS.
INCANDESCENT-LAMP BASE AND SOCKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,623, dated April 25, 1899.
Application filed August 31, 1898. Serial No. 6 39,924. (No model.)
T (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMAND CARL MARIA PRUOKER, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residingat Hanover, Germany,
have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Incandescent-Lamp Bases and Sockets, (Case No. 158,) of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in incandescent-lamp base and socketadapted to be inserted therein, and has for its object the provision of means for preventing the accidental loosening of the base when within [5 said socket and for insuring continuous electrical contact between the base and the contact parts of the socket.
Briefly described, my invention contemplates the provision in a contactmaking socket or device of a spring-like tongue adapted to engage serrations or notches provided upon the contact-making base when the sameis inserted within the socket, whereby the \base is withheld from accidental release from its position within the socket and the electrical continuity of the parts is insured.
I will describe my invention more at length by reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a sectional view of a contactmaking socket and base. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 illustrates my invention applied to an Edison lamp socket and base, and Fig. 4 is a plan view thereof.
The same letter of reference is used to desi gnate corresponding parts in each of the several figures of the drawings.
Upon the insulating base-plate G are mounted the terminal screws a b, the former being connected with a forked plate 0, the extremities of which are bent' upward and form spring-like tongues g, diametrically disposed upon either side of the central contact-screw cl. This screw is connected with the terminal screw 1) by means of a bar extending between the said parts in a recess provided in the insulating-base G., The lamp-base E is provided with a centrally-disposed threaded sleeve 6, which is adapted to screw upon part (l, the said sleeve forming one terminal contact part for the lamp, while the external sleeve f, provided upon the base, forms the second contact part. The sleeve f is serrated or notched at its lower end, the notches therein being adapted to be engaged by the springtongues g when the lamp-base is screwed into position to secure electrical connection with the coacting contact parts. It will be at once understood that when the base E is thus screwed down upon part d the serrations provided in its outer sleeve will be engaged by the spring-like tongues carried by plate 0, and thus the said base will be prevented from being accidentally unscrewed from its contact -making device. The base, however, may be readily removed, since the springs g will be depressed, permitting the rotation of the base in either direction when the same is turned by hand. In addition to preventing the accidental release of the base the springs g secure the firm engagement of the several contact parts.
Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate the application of my invention to an Edison lamp socket and base wherein the well-known threaded exterior sleeve is employed. The terminal binding-screws a and b are respectively connected with the contact-plates o and c, the former in turn being connected with the threaded sleeve of the lamp-socket, while the latter is provided with an uppe'rly-projecting part adapted to engage the central contact part of the lamp-base. Contact-plate c is centrally mounted in the lamp-socket by means of the screw 01. The coacting central contact-piece f, provided upon the lamp-base E, is peripherally serrated or notched, which notches are adapted to be engaged by the spring-tongue g when the base cis screwed within the socket, thereby maintaining the lamp-base in position against accidental dislodgment.
It is obvious that my invention maybe applied to other forms of contact-making bases and sockets than those herein specifically shown and described in illustration of my said invention, and I do not desire to be understood as limiting the same to the precise embodiment herein shown and described.
plifying my improvement, what I claim as when the same is screwed therein under compression of said spiral, substantially as described.
In Witness whereof I hereunto subscribe my name this 13th day of August, A. D. 1898.
AMANI) CARL MARIA PRUOKEH.
