SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 685,765, dated November 5, 1901. Application filed March 13, 1901. Serial No. 51,016. (No model.)

Be it known that'I, ALFRED homes, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Brushes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to brushes, and more particularly to that variety thereof designed especially for the use of travelers and others who are desirous of so disposing the brush that it will occupy a minimum space.

A further object is to provide a brush the bristles of which may be reliably protected while not in use.

A further object is to provide a brush of comparatively simple and inexpensive construction though possessing great neatness in appearance.

Other objects and advantages will be made clearly apparent from the following specification, considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of my in venis entered and secured in the casing, which latter also is designed to form a housing for the bristles when not in use. Fig. 2 is a trans verse section of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 isa transverse section of the brush shown in Fig. 1, showing the bristles turned inward within the housing or handle portion designed for their protection. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing a slightly-modified construction for the casing.

Referring to the numerals on the drawings, 1 indicates the side walls of the casing, which are preferably formed of some suitable sheet metal and are integral with the connecting portion or back section 2, it being understood that one end, as indicated by the numeral 3, is to be permanently closed, while the other end at is hinged to the member2, as indicated by the hinged section 5 in Fig. 1. The side and end sections are each provided with an internally-directed flange 6, which inclines inward sufliciently to meet and lie flush with the outer surface of the shoulder 7, formed upon the back 8 of the brush proper.

The bristles 9 are reliably secured in the usual manner in a suitable section 10 of proper material, said section 10 being properly reinforced by and secured to the back section 8, formed, preferably, of sheet metal and provided with the outwardly-directed flanges 11, which reach outward into engagement with the side walls, and are thence curved around a suitable reinforcing-wire 12 in order to insure the proper degree of rigidity. The ope posite side of the member 10 is preferably reinforced by a metal covering 13, thus per mitting the member 10 to be made very thin and light, so as to occupy a small amount of space. Immediately below the flange 6 I secure to the side walls or form integrally therewith the in wardly-directed rib 14, and by reference to Figs. 2 and 3 it will be observed that the curved edge 12 upon the flanges 11 is designed to be snugly received between the flanges 6 and the rib 14, thus permitting the bristles of the brush to be turned outwardly or inwardly, as shown in said views, and as may be desired. The flange 6 upon the end sections 3 and 4. is designed to be coextensive with the flange carried by the side sections, so that when the end section 4 is in a closed position the flange thereon will rest flush with the outer surface of the shoulder 7 and will in appearance form an integral continuation of the side flanges.

It will be understood that the housing provided by the casing will be of sufficient size to snugly accommodate the bristles when disposed in the position illustrated in Fig. 3, and since the sheetmetal reinforcement 8 is proferably formed of the same material of which the casing is constructed a neat and attractive appearance will be presented by the finished article whether in position for use or storage.

In Fig. et I have shown a slightly-modified construction which may be adopted in forming the side flanges 6 and li the object being to so corrugate said flanges that they will complement each other, and thus insure that the brush when disposed in its operative position will not casually slip therefrom, inasmuch as the corrugations upon the flanges 11 must necessarily ride over or in contact with the corrugations upon the flanges 6, thus insuring against casual withdrawal,though permitting the same to be readily removed and replaced as desired. I prefer, however, to reserve the right to form said flanges straight or corrugated, as may be deemed most desirable in practice.

While I have described the preferred construction and combination of parts deemed necessary in materializing my invention, I desire to comprehend all substantial equivalents and substitutes that may be considered to fairly fall within the scope of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, the operation or manner of using the same may be stated to be as follows: When the brush proper is entered in its casing ready for use, as shown in Fig. 1, the hinged end section 4 may be snapped in position, so that the flange carried thereby will rest against the shoulder 7, thereby closing the end of the easing and preparing the brush ready for use. When, however, it may become desirable to prepare the brush for packin'g, the end section 4 may be readily withdrawn from its closed position, inasmuch as it is only held by a suitable clasp or by the gripping action of the flange 6, when the extended edgeof the member 8 may be grasped and the entire brush proper withdrawn from the guideway formed by the flanges 6 and ribs 14 and the brush turned so that the bristles will be in that the bristles will be safely protected within the housing provided therefor.
