SPECIFIGATIN forming part of Letters Patent N o; 680,355, dated August 13, 1901.
'Serial No.118,278. (No model.)
To all whom it may 6072/007112,.-
B it known that I, MYRON H. POWELL, of Muskegon, county of Muskegon, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stockings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to knitfahrics; and it consists of a stocking in which the foot portion is composed of two independent knit webs joined in a peculiar manner and irl-which the leg is a tubular seamless continuation of both webs of the foot.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a stocking embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a development of the courses of stitches of the webs of the foot portion, showinghow they are joined to each other.
Referring to the drawings, my improved stocking embodies in its Astructure two distinct knit fabrics or webs l and 2, composed of independent yarns, .which webs are joined together, as at 3. The web l forms the upper portion or top of the foot, while the web 2,
which is preferably of a heavier yarn and may be of a contrasting color, forms the bottom of the foot, the toe, and heel. The junction of the contiguous edges of the Webs at the sides of the foot at the lines 3 is made by interlocking rows of selvage-loops 4 and 5, formed on the edges of the webs, the interlocking being such that the selvage-loops of one web will be disposed wholly in the field of the other web and the selvage-loops of the latter will be wholly in the ield of the adjoining web. The interlocking of the loops, it will be seen on reference to Fig. 2, is due to the dispositions of the portions of the yarns connecting the selvage-loops with the main body of the webs, those of one yarn, as 14, passing beneath the loops 4 and those of this latter yarn, as 15, passing beneath the loops 5 of the adjoining yarn. As a result of this peculiar formation there is a firm and uniform connection between the vtwo webs with no distinct seam, such as would be produced by stitching or sewing the edges of the webs together.
The leg G of the stocking is continuous with both webs of the foot, but has its loops in a single tubular web, While the top 7 of the stocking is preferably, but not necessarily, a tubular ribbed seamless continuation of the leg, the entire stocking being thus free from' seams and embodying in its foot structure two distinct and independent Webs.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is l. As a new manufacture a stocking Whose foot portion comprises two independentlyknit webs having on their proximate edges rows of selvage-loops interlocked with each other, and whose leg portion is continuous with said webs but has its loops in a single tubularvweb.
2. The seamless stocking consisting of a tubular seamless knit leg with its front pors tion continued and forming Ythe top of the foot and provided on its respective edges with a row of selvage-loops, a bottom section for the foot forming a continuation of the back of the leg composed of a fabric knit from an independent distinct yarn having on its respective edges a row of selvage-loops, the said row of loops of said sections being interlocked, with therows of one section disposed in the eld of thev other section and vice versa.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand, this 24th day of May, 1900, in the pres ence of two attesting witnesses.
MYRON H. POVELL.
