To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. F. FLos, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Shade- Roller, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

One purpose of the invention is to so con struct a portion of a shade-roller that a retaining device will be longitudinally formed therein, in which device one end of a shade may be quickly and conveniently entered, the device serving to hold fast the entered portion of the shade without the aid of cement, tacks, nails, or the like, providing a means of securing a shade to a roller in such manner that the shade may be readily removed from the roller when desired and substituted byanother one.

Afurther purpose of the invention is to construct a retaining device for the shades on the shade-rollers which will not tear or mutilate the cloth.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

, Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved shade-roller and a portion of a shade secured to the roller; and Fig. 2 is a sectional perspective view of a portion of the roller,-the section being taken transversely through the roller on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, the said view illustrating,- on an enlarged scale, a portion of the retaining device and a portion of the shade attached to the roller through the medium of said device.

10 represents the shade-roller, which is preferably constructed of wood. This roller is provided in its face with a longitudinally-ex tending groove 11.

12 indicates a jacket formed, preferably, of sheetinetal and fitted snugly around the roller 10. One longitudinal edge 16 of this jacket is bent down into the groove 11 to secure it in place. The other longitudinal edge portion of the jacket passes into the groove 11 from the side thereof opposite the edge 16 and is bent downward therein, forming a flat mem- This second-named edge portion of the jacket is now bent outwardly and backwardly to form an outer or top member 13, and from thence the jacket is turned inward between the members 13 and 14 to form a return or intermediate member 15. The jacket thus formed constitutes, at the parts 14, 13, and 15, a shade-retaining device. The shade is now bent at its upper edge portion to form the parallel parts 17 and 18, and these parts are then introduced into the shade-retaining device so that the part 17 lies between the members 13 and 15 and the part 18 lies between the mem bers 14 and 15. This construction will hold the shade securely in place and at the same time will permit the shade to be wound completely on the roller, as in the ordinary manner of using these devices.

Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A shade-roller, comprising a body or roller proper formed with a longitudinal groove in its surface, and a split metallic sleeve or jacket lying snugly around the roller and having one longitudinal edge portion turned into the groove in the roller to hold said edge portion in position, the other 1ongitudinal edge portion being bent inward so that a part thereof lies snugly in the groove, the remaining part of said edge portion being return-bent to form a shade-retaining device.

2. A shade-roller, comprising a body or roller proper formed with a longitudinal groove in its surface, and a split metallic sleeve or jacket lying snugly around the roller and having one longitudinal edge portion turned into the groove in the roller to hold said edge in place, the other longitudinal edge portion havinga part turned into the groove to lie snugly therein, the said portion having other parts bent outward and backward to form a top or outer member and inward to form a return member, the said outer member and the return member lying opposite the groove and forming a shade-retainin g device.
