TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. OARLETON, of Nashua, in the county of Hillsboro, and State of New" Hampshire, have invented an improved Window-Fast; and I do hereby declare that the following-is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon. I
Nature.
The nature of my invention consists in making a. button in a peculiar form, and combining the same with a spring-,so that the whole will form a convenient sash-stop.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and use.
Drawings.
Figure 1 is a perspective View, showing a sash with one of my fast s attached.
Figure 2 is a section showing the fast E, spring R, and part of the sash C.
Figure 3 is an elevation of a window, showing one of my fastenings on the lower sash, and one on the upper- The button is made in form as represented by E, fig. 2, being wedge-shaped, and having a slot, 01;, running through the centre of the piece obliquely to the inner edge of the button. This button is provided with a notch, n m, fig. 2. When the sash is closed, this notch takes the screwS, and being acted upon by the spring R, serves to hold the sash so that it cannot be opened from the outside. The button swings upon the screw S, which, being in the slot 0}), admits of a longitudinal as well as a swinging motion to the button E. The sash can be held in any desiredposition by simply crowding the button E downwards, so that the thicker part of the button comes between the screw S and the sash 0, thus creating a sufficient friction to hold the sash in position.
Claim. What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is The combination of the button E with the spring B, when made and arranged substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
B. F. CARLETON.
