ALFRED J. CLOW, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
APPAREL-BELT.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 661,689, dated NOVmlOe' 13 1906- Applioation iiledApil 2, 1900. Serial No. 11,106. (No model.)
T all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, ALFRED J. CLOW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Belts, of which the following is a specification.
. My object is to provide a belt of novel, attractive, and improved construction which dispenses With the buckle usually provided and avoids the presence of a loose end or iap when the belt is adjusted about the waist of a wearer.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved belt with its ends fastened together as when in use; Fig. 2, asimilar View of the same unfastened; Fig. 3, an enlarged broken view of one end of the belt provided with a metal clasp of the form I pre` fer to provide, and Fig. 4 a View of the end portion of the belt with the clasp removed to show the construction.
A is a belt of softflexible material, such as leather, formed toward one end with a narrow neck portion a, terminating in a head b. Toward its opposite end the belt is provided with an elongated slit or narrow slot c, terminating in an enlarged opening d.
B B are similarly-constructed metal clasps or fastener members bent to fit over the endsA of the belt and present the outer plate portion e and inner part j". The part f of each clasp is provided with a socket f', flanked by outwardly-curved lips f2, and each clasp is securely fastened in place, as by means of theV rivets g shown. Adjacent to the base a. of the neck portion a is either one or a series of headed studs or fastener members 7i, and equidistant therewith from the opposite end of the belt are an equal number of headed studs or fastener members h. To permit the heads of the studs to pass readily into the sockets f', both ends of the belt are recessed, as shown at i. Y
The belt is applied by passing the head B from the inner side of the belt through the slot c, turning it fiatwise in the opening d and causing the clasp-sockets f' to engage the studs h h. The lips f2 facilitate guiding of the slots over the studs and elongate the slots to renderthefasteningmoresecure. Theclasps are formed, preferably, of sprngy metal, s0 that the heads of the studs may be clamped by the partsfagainst the under surfaces of the parts e with sufficient rmness to hold them in engagement should the belt be worn loosely about the body. The strain in use is equally distributed between the fastenings, which renders the construction particularly stron g and durable. The clasps may be made as ornamental as desired, and when worn as shown in Fig. l the belt presents a particularly novel and attractive appearance.
While I prefer to construct my improvements generally as shown and described, they may be variously modified in the matter of details of construction Without departing from the spirit of my invention as defined by the claims. n
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A belt provided in one end with an opening and at its opposite end with a narrow neck portion to pass through the said opening, a fastener member on each extremity and fastener members on the body of the belt to be engaged by said extremity members, substan- 'tially as described.
2. A belt provided in one end with an opening d and slot c, and at its opposite end with `a neck Ct terminating in a head b, a fastener member on each extremity, and fastener members on the body of the belt to be engaged by vsaid extremity members, substantially as described.
8. A belt provided in one end with an opening d and slot c, and atits opposite end with a neck a terminating in a head b, clasps B B' on the extremities provided with sockets f', and headed studs h h on the body portion of the belt, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
ALFRED J. CLOW.
