COTTON-SCRAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 656,971, dated August 28, 1900.
Application filed June 23,1900. Serial No. 21,298. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NEWTON C. HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Knights, in the county of Ooosa and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton-Scrapers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in cotton-scrapers for removing grass, weeds, and olods from cotton-rows and it consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts,as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly set forth in the appended claim.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective construction of hanger or standard for carrying the scraper and improved means for adjusting the same to suit the height of the plow beam or stock on which it is used.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the plow-stock, showing the application of my invention thereto. Fig. 2 is a front view of the hanger detached. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same.
Referring more particularly to the drawin gs,in which like referencecharacters designate correspondingparts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 represents the beam or stock of a plow of ordinary construction provided with a standard or hanger2 for the attachment of the plow shovel or share. My invention is designed to be applied to the beam in front of the plow-standard and to be used in connection with a rear or heel scraper 3, attached thereto and serving to loosen up and pulverize the earth as the grass, weeds, clods, &c., are removed by the front or clear- 1n g scraper.
The hanger or standard 4 carries the clearing-scraper 5 and consists of a strap or band of metal doubled or bent upon itself to form two longitudinal parallel arms 6,whose upper ends 7 are spaced apart to form a clip or clamp to embrace the beam, one or more securingbolts 8 being passed through the upper extremities of said portions to draw the same inward and against the sides of the beam. At the base or lower end of this clip or clamp portion the arms are bent laterally or at right angles to their upper ends and to the beam, as at 8, and thence extend downwardly and laterally, and their lower ends are given a quarter-twist, as shown at 9, to bring said arm at a diagonal angle to said beam and to the clip or clamp portion of the hanger. The lower ends of the arms are joined by a curved or return-bent portion l0,which is enlarged to form a socket for the reception of the bolt 11,which secures the scraper to the standard. By this construction the scraper is supported at a diagonal angle to the beam in such a manner that the grass, weeds, clods, and other debris turned up thereby are thrown to one side,so as to clear the row for the heel-scraper, which turns up and pulverizes the earth in the rear of the clearing-scraper. By this means a simple but effective construction of hanger is provided, which supports the scraper firmly and securely and dispenses with the use of the cumbersome and complicated devices of the character heretofore employed.
To stay or brace the hanger and adjust the same to suit plow beams or stocks of different heights, adjustable bracing connections therefor are provided. These consist of cuffs or clips 14:, applied to the beam at the front and in rear of the hanger and carrying the diagonal braces 15,pivoted at their upper ends to the securing-bolt l6thereof and at their lower ends upon a bolt 17, acting as a common fastening therefor to secure them to the hanger. The braces serve to effectively stay the hanger, and by adjusting the clips or cuffs on the beam the hanger may be raised or lowered to suit the height of the beam in a manner readily understood.
The operation of the device will be apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and it will be understood that changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the invention Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a cotton-scraper, the combinatiomwith a beam or stock, of a standard orhanger consisting of a band or strap doubled upon itself to form parallel arms having their upper ends spaced apart to form a clip to engage the beam, the arms thence being bent laterally and downwardly and united at their rear ends by a return portion forming a socket and bent or twisted at a diagonal angle, a bolt passed through the upper ends of the clip portion to secure it to the beam, a scraper secured by a bolt passed through the said socket portion of the hanger and adapted to extend at a diagonal angle to the clip portion thereof and to the beam, cuffs applied to the beam at the front and in rear of the hanger, and diagonal braces secured at their upper ends by the'securing-bolts of the cuffs and united at their lower ends to the hanger and to each other by a common fastening passed therethrough, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
