UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL LLOYD, OF CAMBRIDGE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO O. FRED. AUSLUND, OF SAME PLACE.
SAS H- LOG K.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 652,792, dated July 3, 1900. Application filed March 15, 1 00. Serial No. 8,698. (NomocleL) Locks; and I do hereby'declare that the fol-' lowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference markedthereon.
The present invention has relation to that class of sashfasteners adapted for attachment to the meeting-rails of the upper and lower sashes; and the object thereof is to provide a simple and effective device that will securely fasten and lock the sashes closed.
The invention consists in a sash fastener and lock constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure l of the drawings is a top plan view of a portion of the two meeting-rails of the upper and lower sashes, showing my improved fastener and lock applied thereto; Fig. 2, a detail view in perspective of the pivoted plate; Fig. 3, an edge view looking toward the inner or lower sash.
In the accompanying drawings, A B represent a portion of the two meeting-rails of the upper and lower sashes of a window, respec-- tively, and to these rails my improved fastening and locking device is connected.
The device consists of a rectangular metal plate 0, pivoted to the meeting rails A by means of a screw or or by any other suitable and well-known means as found best adapted.
to the purpose. -The plate Qat one of its edges has a notch b, which notch is of sufiicient length or depth to have its base 0 on line with its pivotal connection. One of the side walls of the notch 19 is straight, as shown at d, while the opposite wall of the notch is curved outwardly, as shown at e, to admit of the plate 0 being swung around in engagement with the keeper D. This keeper," as will be noticed, is of sufficient length to extend over and across the plate, near the outer edge thereof, thereby forming a brace to the plate as additional security when the locking screw E is not brought into use.
The pivotscrew or extends through a smooth hole f, and at the opposite end of the plate 0 and on line with the hole f is a screw-threaded hole 9, with which engages the locking screw E. The keeper D is square in cross-section and has a square shank D, which is seated in the square seat b of the notch b.
When it is desired to securely lock the sashes closed against intruders or persons E is turned until the point thereof embeds itself in the wood of the rail of the lower sash, which will prevent the plate 0 from being moved, and thereby hold it perfectly rigid and stationary.
The locking thumb-screw E forms an ad ditional security for a perfect fastening of the plate 0, or when it is simply required to hold the sashes closed during the day the locking thumb-screw is not required for use. The straight side wall of the notch in the plate O, as shown at d, more securely holds the plate against rattling, as the wall of the notch being straight it will come in frictional contact with the sideof the keeper D.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A sash-fastener comprising a pivot-screw, a keeper constructed with a screw-threaded stem, a square shank, and an oblong head, a binding thumb-screw, and an oblong plate constructed with a smooth hole, at its inner end, for the pivot-screw, a screw-threaded hole, at its outer end, for the binding thumbscrew, and an oblong keeper-opening, extend= ing inwardly from one side, formed with a base in line with its smooth and screw-threaded holes, a square seat for the square shank of the keeper, a curved corner on the inner side of the keeper-opening and a square cornor on the outer side ofthe keeper-opening. In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL, LLOYD.
