SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 652,213, dated June 19, 1900.

Be it known that I, JOHN A. HUTOHISON, of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattress- Frames; and I do hereby declare that the followingis afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

The object of my present invention is to provide a mattress-frame which is simple in its construction and strong and rigid by reason of its form of construction and provided with means for giving the fabric an elevation above the rails of a bedstead with which the mattress-frame may be employed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a perspective View of a bedstead and my improved mattress-frame in position thereon. Fig. 2 shows a plan view, on an enlarged scale, of one corner of the mattress frame. Fig. 3 shows a partial end View from the inner side of a corner of the bed-frame, being the same part shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 shows a perspective view of one corner of the mattressframe and being the same parts shown in Fig. 2. 7

Referring to the reference letters and characters in a more particular description, 1 indicates the side rails of the bed-frame, which are substantially straight, except for the up-. wardly-turned ends 2 2. The side rails are preferably made out of tubular material or pipe. Upon the upwardly-turned ends of the side rails are secured, by bolts at 3, the crossbars or end bars 4:, which in the construction as shown are of angular form. Spanning the corner or angle between the cross-bar and side rail is the brace 5, secured to the lower Web of the cross-bar by a bolt at 6 and secured to the side' rail by a bolt at 7. at which the brace 5 engages with the side rails is about that Where the end of the rail begins to curve to give the upwardly-turned end. The brace 5 is carried over the upper side of the side rail 1 in an extension 8. The extension 8 is adapted to rest upon the side rails A of the bedstead and support the mattress-frame, as shown in Fig. 1. By reason of the projection 8 being carried out from the top or upper side of the side rail the body of the side rail lies in substantially the same plane with the side rail A of the bedstead and affords a shoulder adapted to strike against the bedframe rail, as clearly appears from the dotted outline of the bed-frame rail in Figs. 2 and 3, preventing the mattress-frame from getting out of position when in position in the bedstead.

The fabric B, which may be of any suitable material, is secured to the upwardly-projecting flanges of the end bars, and the overhanging ends 4 of the end bars enable the fabric to be carried out over and above the side rails of the bedstead when the mattress-frame is in position for use.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination in a mattress-frame of the side rails having upwardly-turned ends, cross bars secured on said upwardly-turned ends and projecting beyond the side rails, braces spanning the inside angles between the said side rails and the cross-bars and secured at one end to said cross-bars and at the other to said side rails at points on the horizontal portion adjacent to said upwardly turned ends, and continued in supporting projecti0ns8, substantially as set forth.
