Be it known that I, ALEXIS E. OARON, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Kankakee, in the county of Kankakee and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head-Rests, of which the following'is a specification.

My invention relates to head-rests, and especially to adjustable head-rests for surgical and dental chairs, and has for its object to provide a head-rest adjustable in any desired position and attachable without skilled aid temporarily to any chair provided with a back. This object I accomplish in the manner and by the means hereinafter more fully described in detail, and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being bad tothe accompanying drawings, in which like figures indicate like parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention in position. Fig. 2 is a front view of my invention. Fig. 3 is a sectional view, on line 00, Fig. 1, of sliding collar. Fig. 4 is a sectional View on line y y, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is an end view of one of the collars.

My invention consists of a tube 1. To the ends of said tube 1 are rigidlysecured or made integral therewith 'collars 2, through which are half-round holes 3. The collars 2 are so placed that the half-round holes 3 bisect the interior of the tube 1 on opposite sides. Through each of said collars 2 a set-screw works. Passing through the half-round holes 3 into the tube 1 are half-round rods 4, which slide alongside each other in the tube 1 and permit the body of the head-rest to be extended at will until nearly three times its normal length. To the outer end of one of said rods 4 is rigidly secured or made integral therewith an arm 5, which projects at an angle from said rod 4 and is provided with any desired nu mber of screw-threaded holes 6, through which set-screws 7 work. A bracket 8, provided with screws to attach it to the under side of the chair-seat, has a socket on its face to receive the end of the set-screw 7. On the outer end of the other rod at is rigidly fixed or made integral therewith a ball 9, the end of the rod ehaving been reduced in size and made round in order to give as much surface as possible to the ball 9. The head-support 10 consists of two cushions arranged to support the sides of the head or any of the ordinary forms and are attached to an arm 11, which has a ball 12 on its end. Two plates 13 are provided each with two sockets 14 to receive the balls 9 and 12 and between said sockets 14 with holes 15, the hole 15 in one being screw-threaded. A set-screw 16 works in the holes 15 and is adapted to clamp the plates 13 firmly upon' the balls 9 and 12 and hold the head-support 10 in the position in which it has been arranged. A collar 17 in two parts, adapted to slide on the tube 1, has perforated ears 18 projecting from each part. The ears 18 of one part of the collar 17 are slotted to receive the ends of the arms 19, hereinafter described. Set-screws 20 work in the perforations of the ears 18 and are adapted to clamp the collar securely at any desired point on the tube 1 and to retain the ends of the arms 19 in the cars 18. The arms 19 have hooks 21 on their upper ends adapted to overlap the top of the back of a chair and their lower ends shouldered, so as to prevent their being turned in theears 18 upward beyond a desired point.

The operation of myinvention is as follows: The collar 17is clamped at any desired point on the tube 1 and the hooked ends of the arms 19 placed'over the top of the back'of the chair. The bracket 8 having been previously secured to the under side of the seat of the chair, the arm 5 is lowered until it rests against the bracket 8, when the rod 4 is secured by the set-screw in the collar 3. The set-screw 7 is now placed in the proper hole 6 and screwed up tightly against the bracket 8, the point of the screw 7 being in the socket in the bracket 8. The head-rest is now securely attached to the chair. The other rod tis now raised sufliciently to bring the head-support 10 to the desired height and secured by the set-screw with perforated ears, those on one part slotted to receive said arms, and set-screws passing through said perforations and the ends of said arms and adapted to clamp said collar on said body, substantially as shown and described.

In an adjustable head-rest provided with a body adapted to be attached to the back of any chair, arms adapted to hook over the back of such chair, the lower ends of said arms pivotally mounted on the body of said rest and shouldered to allow only desired upward movement, substantially as shown and described.

3. In an adjustable head-rest adapted to be attached to any chair and provided with slidable rods carrying the head-rest and means of attachment to the bottom of said chair, a body consisting of a tube having the two ends half closed on opposite sides, substantially as shown and described.

4. In an adjustable head-rest adapted to be attached to any chair, a body consisting of a tube havingthe two ends half closed on opposite sides, half-round rods entering said tube from opposite ends and sliding alongside each other in said tube, and setscrews passing through the closed sides of said ends and adapted to secure said rods in position, substantially as shown and described.

5. A head-rest consisting of a tube having each end half closed but on opposite sides, half-round rods slidably secured in such ends, one rod having on its outer end an arm provided with screw-threaded holes and adapted to be secured against the bottom of the chairseat, the other rod provided at its outer end with a ball, a head-support sccu red 011 an arm having on its end a ball, two plates adapted to receive and clamp said balls between them, a collar in two parts adapted to slide on'said tube,said parts provided with perforated ears, adapted to clamp said collar on said tube, the ears on one part being slotted,and arms adapted to hook over the back of said chair and pivotally mounted in said slotted ears with a limited upward movement, substantially as shown and described.
