UNiTEn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELDRIDGE J. SMITH, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES A. BAKER.
BAG CARRIER AND CLOSURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 641,340, dated January 16, 1900.
Application filed May 19,1899. Serial No. 717,514. (No model.)
To (4Z6 whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELDRIDGE J. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag Carriers and Closures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention relates to a new and improved bag closure and carrier; and it has for its object to provide a cheap and simple device of this character especially adapted for closing the month end of paper and other bags and for facilitating the carrying of such bags.
It is the prime object of the invention to provide a bag closure and carrier that can be easily and quickly adjusted to position upon the bag without the employment of any special tool for this purpose, and which can be as readily detached from the bag when it is desired to empty or remove the contents therefrom, said closure being combined witha simple form of handle to facilitate carrying the Briefly stated, the combined closure and carrier comprises a suitablyshaped frame preferably composed of wire and having a cross-bar at its lower end and a handle portion at its upper end, with a slidably-mounted locking-bar arranged to move freely up and down upon the wire frame and over which locking-bar the month end of the bag is fold ed or doubled, all as will be hereinafter fully described.
In the annexed drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a side elevation of one of my improved bag closures and carriers. Fig. 2 is a slightly-modified form of the invention. Fig. 3 is an end view of the device shown applied to a bag. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a further modified form of the invention.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings I have illustrated one of my improved bag closures and carriers composed entirely of wire and consisting of a handle 1, having inwardly-bent portions forming shoulders 2 and depending parallel arms 3, the lower ends of which are hooked,
In applying the bag in position the mouth end thereof is preferably doubled and passed over and around the locking-bar 6, as illustrated in Fig. 3, and the said bar and that portion of the bag wrapped thereabout is then drawn down until a portion thereof is firmly clamped between the cross-bar 5 and lockingbar 6, as will be readily understood from an inspection of the drawings. It will now be seen that the heavier the contents of the bag the tighter will be the clamping action thereupon by the cross-bar 5 and locking-bar 6 when carried by the handle.
In the modified form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 2 I have shown a round wooden handle 8, having openings in the opposite ends thereof which receive the laterally-bent ends 9 of the wire frame, said ends being sprung therein, as will be obvious. The locking-bar 10 is formed and mounted substantially like the bar illustrated in Fig. 1.
In Fig. 4. I have illustrated a further modified form of the invention, in which instance the handle 11 is formed of a concavo-convex or channeled metal strip having openings in the opposite ends thereof, and the wire frame 12 is of U shape, the ends thereof being passed through said openings in the handle and bent over or hooked, as at 13, to securely hold the handle in position. The locking-bar 14: is made, as heretofore described, with eyes at its opposite ends, which encircle the parallel vertical arms of the wire frame.
The handles illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4 are of very simple construction and present a Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. As a new article of manufacture, a combined bag closure and carrier comprising a frame formed from a single piece of wire having parallel side arms and a bag-embracing cross-bar, combined with a hand-holding portion formed of a channeled metal strip having openings at its opposite ends to receive the free ends of the said parallel side arms, and a locking-bar slidably mounted upon said frame and movable to and from the cross-bar.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a combined bag closure and carrier comprising a single-wire frame having a hand-holding portion at one end, a bag-embracing cross-bar at the opposite end and a locking-bar slidably mounted upon said frame and movable to and from the said cross-bar said locking-bar being formed of wire and having its opposite ends bent to form eyes which encircle the wire frame.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a combined bag closure and carrier comprising a hand-holding means provided with openings at the opposite ends thereof, a single wire frame having a bag-embracing cross-bar and parallel arms the free ends of which are shaped to enter the openings in said handle, and a locking-bar slidably mounted upon said wire frame;
4:- As a new article of manufacture, a combined bag closure and carrier, comprising a substantially U-shaped wire frame having a hand-holding portion and a bag-embracing portion, and a locking-bar slidably supported upon the frame said locking-bar being formed of wire having its opposite ends bent to provide eyes which freely encircle theparallel arms of the frame.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
