(Cl. 224-49) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A carrier for cordwood and the like comprising a base made of two spaced apart U-shaped frames permanently secured to and depending from a centrally disposed handle and so constructed as to hold a load in an elevated position relative to the ground to maintain the load in a dry condition.

This invention relates to carrying devices and more particularly to one especially, though not restrictively, for convenient stacking and carrying random lengths of lumber, logs, cordwood and similar scrap material for firewood.

The principal object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which is of light weight, durable, simplified construction involving a minimum number of parts and capable of quantity production by simple bending jigs.

The foregoing and other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof and in which:

FIGURE 1 is a front elevational view of a carrying device made in accordance with my invention.

FIGURE 2 is an end elevational view of FIGURE 1.

FIGURES 3 and 4 are similar views showing a modified form of construction.

FIGURE 5 is a perspective detail view on a small scale illustrating the carrier when loaded.

FIGURE 6 is a perspective view illustrating a further modification, and

FIGURES 7 and 8 are similar views of a still further modification.

With continuing reference to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate like parts, and particularly FIGURES 1 and 2 thereof, the embodiment shown therein comprises two identical, substantially U-shaped bottom frame members indicated generally at 1 and 2 and each having two parallel legs portions 3 and 4 made of steel rod bent upwardly from a bottom crossmember 5. The top end of each leg member is bent upwardly as at 6 and 7 into parallel relation for securement as by welding or the like as at 8 to both sides of the bottom end of parallel upright members 9 and 10 welded as at 11 at their top ends to the underside of a handle 12 preferably made of hollow steel pipe or tubing. Accordingly, this embodiment of the invention comprises only five parts, namely, the two identical bottom frame members 1 and 2, the vertical members 9 and 10 and handle 12 of the top frame.

In the modification shown in FIGURES 3-4, the bottom frame member 1 of FIGURES 1-2 is replaced by one having its leg portions 3A-4A continuing upwardly as at 14-15 and bent inwardly at their top ends as at 14A-15A for loose but permanent attachment to the interior of the hollow tubular handle 12A. The other bottom frame member 2A is identical with its counterpart 2 in FIGURE 2 and similarly secured as at 8A adjacent the bottom ends of the upwardly extending portions 14-15 of frame member 4A. Thus I have provided a further simplified construction involving only three parts, namely, one main frame 3A-4A, 14-15, a second frame 2A and handle 12A.

In the further modification shown in FIGURE 6, also involving only three parts, the top frame member comprises a handle 20 made of flat band iron or the like bent downwardly into two parallel leg members 21-22. Two identical bottom frame members also made of flat band iron or similar material are each bent upwardly from both ends of a cross member 23 into leg members 24-25 rigidly secured in upwardly converging relation to each other by rivets 26 or the like to the bottom ends of the handle members 21-22.

In the still further modification, as shown in FIGURES 7 and 8, each bottom frame member indicated generally at 30 and exemplary of those shown in FIGURES l-S is provided with a load-supporting crossbar 31 welded at both of its ends as at 32 to the leg members 33 in vertical spaced relation to the crossmember 34. The bottom end portions of the leg members 33 are bent downwardly as at 35 in parallel relation to each other and to the upwardly bent portions 6B-7B of the first forms of leg members so that the same bending jig, not shown, may be used. By this arrangement a load supported upon the crossbars 31 will be elevated from the ground for quick drying by air circulation through the space below the load.

While I have shown particular forms of embodiment of my invention, I am aware that many minor changes therein will readily suggest themselves to others skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

A device for carrying horizontally stacked cordwood,

said device comprising two identical substantially U- shaped bottom frames each having two parallel leg members converging upwardly from a bottom cross member, then upwardly into parallel relation to each other,

a unitary top frame member comprising two vertically disposed parallel leg members,

means permanently rigidly securing the bottom ends of said top frame leg members to said upwardly extending parallel top ends of the bottom frame members, and

cross members formed integral with said leg members of said bottom frames near the bottom end thereof whereby a load supported upon said cross members will be elevated from the ground to maintain a supported load in a dry condition.
